Three nurses who found themselves missing hearty Filipino breakfasts while fighting on the front lines of New York City’s Covid-19 outbreaks have taken matters into their own hands by opening their own restaurant. “When we got off from work, we were so hungry and we were craving Filipino food,” said nurse Jude Canela, who opened Bilao with friends Joan Calanog and Maricris Dinopol close to their hospital in Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

Working long hours whilst trying to establish your own business too is a lot of work and dedication. Kudos to them. I hope they are successful

This dude has an incredible work ethic...full shift at the hospital and then run a restaurant. Hard enough to do one of those alone

Seems like a lot of work for them to be both nurses and running a restaurant! Props to them

Filipinos are the kind of people who are so full of pride for their culture that they want to share that pride and love with everyone they meet.

It's really a heavy meal, considering that locally, it also includes coffee or hot cocoa and a sour pork soup or herby beef soup. It's meant to power up your body throughout the day as most hardworking Filipinos skip lunchtime.

Such a positive energy. Taking care of people is what nurses do. I hope their restaurant becomes more successful. I'm Indonesian, I often eat rice for breakfast 😃

This is so amazing and wholesome. I’m a night shift nurse too and I’m from Thailand. When I get off work in the morning I’m usually starving and craving Thai breakfast. Love their hard work!

Filipinos, like many Asians, LOVE FOOD! You can judge this, when you arrive in a country, by counting how many food stalls or restaurants you pass by before arriving at your house or hotel.
.
Here in Sydney, you can count them with just one hand, some of them CLOSED outside of lunch or dinner hours!
.
MABUHAY po! And may your business prosper! And thank you too, for your service too as a frontline worker in the fight against COVID et al!

This is so exciting and thank you big time for spreading the original Filipino cuisine to the world. There’s more to follow like foods from difference Filipino provinces, like Bicolano, Kapampangan, etc. 😉❤️🇵🇭🍽

Here in Hawaii, Filipino restaurants are everywhere. Not just filipino but other asian restaurants too! Proudly the Asian state of US!

Wow that's commendable
I work in construction for 10 hours a day 5 to 6 days a week and that is hard. Last year I worked at a covid testing and vaccination center for 5 days a week 12 hour shifts and that was exhausting. If I had to run a restaurant after either of those I would be in the hospital!

My Asian friends’ parents all own restaurants, they worked hard so that their kids can become doctors, attorneys or other professionals, then one day one of them decided to open a restaurant, his parents said “what did we worked so hard for?”

Salute all to our healthcare workers!
I am surprised by his strength to open a restaurant despite its busy schedule this man made me more inspired to work harder.

Filipinos are some of the kindest people you will ever meet, it’s no surprise many go into the nursing profession. This is impressive for him to take on a restaurant business on top of him being a nurse - major props!
