How to Make a Stitching Pony

This is how I made a quick and easy stitching pony that can hold leather pieces while stitching or can act as a general purpose third hand to hold small projects so you can work on them with both your hands.

Several months ago I used your idea and made two stitching ponies from some leftover lumber. One of them had a fixed base and the other base swiveled. I used some light leather for the covering on the top of the clamp. I also used a bolt and put a spring between the uprights. For the tightening handle I used my hole saw and made a round handle about three inches in diameter. Both of the stitching ponies had some flaws in my craftsmanship, but they worked well. In fact they both worked so well that when I showed them to my brothers they wanted one. I gave them both away. I thought I wouldn't need one after all. Then I did a leather project and wished I had a stitching pony. I remembered your tutorial and how simple you made it look. I started on another stitching pony and while the glue dried I came and watched the video and found I had remembered most of what you had told me. Thank you for your ideas and help.

I tried sewing leather project without a stitch pony but that didn't work out too well.
Went looking to buy one but decided probably cost less to make one. I watched quite a few videos but they seemed to have too many pieces to cut. I came to your video and just what I was looking for an easy way to make one. I already have everything I need to make one except had no easy plans. Great video by the way. You've saved me money that I can use towards something I can build. Thank you very much.

Thanks for the video! Mine came out great. I measured the arms to the length of the floor to my knees so I can sit in a chair and have my feet on the boards to steady the whole thing. I also added some felt on the bottom so it didn't scratch up my floor.

Hey pal, you made the most simplest pony stitching tool ever !
I saw many of projects on YT, but your is so easy to make that everyone also without skills... can surely do.
If... just if... 😀 you agree, putting a spring with a couple of spacers, on to the bolt (inside the arms), will make easier the "jaws opening".
Forgive my English please ☺

Hi there, just a quick note, I made this item today, I followed your presentation and instructions and everything went to plan,
Looks and works well and like you I used old wood and other bits from the garage.
Thanks again

Thanks for the vid. I've got this stitching pony and it works like a dream. I used a spring-loaded hinge (the type that closes doors automatically) to keep the pony closed before you tighten the nut. Thanks once again!!
