The new Dacia Sandero Stepway is a high-riding crossover version of the regular Sandero hatchback, with improved technology and rugged looks. Every version has five seats, an array of safety features, and a range of economical petrol engines. But with a price tag starting from around £11,500, can it compete with more expensive rivals like the Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio or Skoda Fabia? Nicola Hume delivers the Carbuyer verdict.

If you expect Bentley materials in an 8k car and complain about the plastic doors, you're a brit.

Engineering at it's finest! Put your money where it delivers the most value. This french-romanian car is the real every day milionaire car. I have been driving the sandero 2 every day, for 160 000 kms, no problem whatsoever. I used to own a VW eos that wrecked my budget every 2 months or so.

I have a 2017 Sandero with a 1 litre engine. Absolutely excellent car for the money. A car is just a tool for me so why pay more?!

Often wondered why car reviewers take against plastic on doors/dashboards etc... the car is cheap. I cant ever recall getting in a car feeling the need to scratch the plastic? A car with leather interior still does the same thing as a car that has plastic - if you want to pay £20k more for that then that's fine, but those who aren't taken in by this unnecessary fluff and expense the Dacia range is good value and robust - the big brother - Duster is a great fun car that i've had for a few years and its more reliable and fun than any of my previous cars (and its 150BHP!)... Jag/Ford/Vauxhall/Seat etc... look past the badge and have a great fun car!

A better looking car than most new BMWs... A very complete and very affordable car for 90% of drivers.

I love the Dacia Sandero. So much so that I was one of the first to buy a new one here in the UK back in March 2013. If you are prepared to accept the Sandero for what it is, which is good, honest, value for money, basic transportation, it fills that remit with aplomb. If I wanted to go blasting down a twisty B road, I would buy a sports car or a hot hatch. If all you want is a hassle free way to get around, in reliable comfort, with minimal fuss, and maximum value, then I cannot recommend the Dacia Sandero highly enough.

For a budget car it looks quiet brilliant!

I would add cheap cost to maintenance, chesp exchange parts, good behavior on bad roads, the value in time decrease less then others brands...etc, etc.
With all kind the crises all around peoples are going to appreciate savings ...

Just ordered a new Sandero Stepway, approximate delivery May 2022. Had my current Sandero Stepway from new for 7 years, 147, 000 miles later and no problems at all had absolutely no hesitation in getting the newer Sandero Stepway Prestige model, in Highland Grey.

From what I heard I was expecting an unsophisticated, slow off the mark plodder. What I got was a great looking vehicle, enough technics to throw a stick at, comfortable ride and a nippy off the mark and good speeds throughout the gears. Only negative is the steering compared to my last car Honda Civic 69 reg. More than happy with it and I've saved £12000.

Just bought it a month ago and I am wery happy with it and I have gone for the essential model with AC and spare wheel and the 65HP version . Mind you it’s not that slow as the figures suggest, yes it’s not the quickest thing in the world but it’s quick enough for most people at least for me 😉

I love cars like this (and I'm a petrolhead with a Lotus in the garage). I would definitely buy this for my wife who has zero interest in cars and just wants a runabout. She says she likes the styling (so do I actually), so that's a win. The money I save by getting her a low price runabout I can put towards something more special for me, hurrah! I'd get the top spec model though with the 100ps engine and LPG.

I ran the rear engine skoda estelles as 2nd cars in the late 70s and 80s. I used them as a to b workhorses to commute 40 miles a day. Did a 100k miles in most. Very easy to repair. Distributors a common earth failure but slow, comfortable, great in bad weather but saved me 1000’s. Dacia look to be in same value for money but with modern safety and mechanicals. It depends what you want a car for imo

Haven't watched Carbuyer reviews for a little while. Great, informative review, and Nicola is a hoot! Love the 'Carry On Carbuyer' moment with the doorhandles.

Brilliant cars for the money. Our Stepway Essential is just due for it's 1st mot in September. A faultless 3 years. I would avoid an electric handbrake. I hope Dacia don't start making their cars complicated and therefore troublesome like expensive brands.
