Astronomy graduate student Kate (Jennifer Lawrence) and her mentor Dr. Randall (Leonardo DiCaprio) are shocked to discover during one of their research sessions that a comet the size of the Himalayas is approaching the Earth at full speed, and that, unsurprisingly, in six months, the comet will reach the Earth, destroying everything here.
Kate and Randall approach U.S. President Orleans (Meryl Streep) to take the matter seriously, but all they get is ridicule and scorn. After that, the master and disciple turn to the media, deciding to skip the government and reveal the secret directly to the public, and the results are certainly not as good as they could have been, not only that, but Kate is arrested by the FBI for leaking state secrets. When President Orleans is caught up in the photo scandal, she finally thinks of these two poor scientists and decides to give them another chance to tell the world about the destruction of the Earth through the mouth of the government.
