I was so afraid to only make downwind progress that I was edging way too early. I took two lessons and it was only 1/4 the way through my second lesson that he said something that finally clicked to keep my board going towards the kite. He said "push your rear hip out and away, don't try to push your front foot towards the kite". Man it was like a magic key. The next waterstart I shot up and rode it out and gained the speed to properly edge. It's amazing that a rider can know exactly what they need to do, but it just has to be said in a manner that clicks with them. Once I got up, it became a 100% success rate. I agree with all your points here. It's just everyone has their lock and you have to find the key to open it up!

One thing that slowed me down when I was learning water starts was after correcting the kite in a power dive, I wasn't sheeting out at all to allow the kite to climb easier. This led to many backstalls. The upside? I became *really* good at relaunches.
