Also please, please, *please* remember to *never* use your fabric shears for cutting anything other than fabric. It literally only takes one cut of something else to ruin them

Learning how to duplicate clothes you have (turning them into patterns) is a great way to make something you know you'll like. My favorite raglan Tshirt was torn up from wearing it too much but i was able to duplicate it and make a new one that fit even better!

Also Amazon has muslin fabric which gives you like 10 yards for 35 bucks! It doesn't have any stretch and it's super easy to sew, so it's excellent for testing a pattern and adjusting before using a nicer/more expensive fabric.

FYI, lots of libraries have things like sewing machines that you can check out and use. Check out your library and then you can try it out first before committing to buying something!

A sewing machine is awesome but not necessary. I've been hand sewing since I was 15, I'm 38. I taught myself. Sure, it's not as polished and takes longer, but it's possible. And you can get patterns free online, or even create your own using your existing clothing. And repurposing fabric is also a great thing for a budget.

I would still consider myself a beginner sewist, but I would also highly encourage perfecting one type of garment to where it's basically second nature for you to make it. I am currently wearing a scrappy wrap skirt, and after perfecting my techniques it was easy as anything to whip this up. Up. My other two things that I can make without even thinking about it are tote bags and aprons. Even with pockets.

**Jus want to give a heads up**

•Buy a tape measure that has fiber glass in-between the sides because cheap ones can shrink, which will screw up your measurements. (Ig one could argue otherwise but jus good to keep in mind).
• For the pins, I don't recommend getting ones that are plastic, instead get some like glass or ceramic, ((jus something that won't melt)), because when you go to use an iron the ball on top will melt.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND this YouTuber seems very lovely and her tips are helpful but would def recommend watching a whole video for beginner supplies to get a more in-depth overview.

check your local libraries too!!! the main one in my county has a “makers space” which includes sewing machines and a lot of other cool stuff (3d printing, criqut, and leatherworking???). i think these are starting to become more common as libraries are trying to stay in use. its all free, you just gotta bring the supplies to use the machines

OMG this is just what I needed! My sewing machine is coming in this week and I needed a straightforward, comprehensive list of what I need and what I DON'T need (yet). You're a life saver. Thank you!

Also if someone in your neighborhood is having a garage sale, I recommend looking there for sewing machines (especially old peoples garage sales ngl) I got mine at one and while its an older model it works fantastic, was $20 and came with a ton of sewing supplies such as extra needles, string, extra presser foots, pins, etc
I am definitely a beginner sewer so i would fact check this first but it worked for me😊

this is going to sound actually insane but michael's sells a beginners sewing kit by loops and threads, i believe. it comes with a gauge, tape measure, tomato pin cushion and pins, hand needles, a seam ripper and more, but the highlight is the purple handled fabric scissors that come with. Literally this whole kit is around 20 dollars, i've tested many many pairs of sewing shears and these are still my ride or die. I've had them for four years now, including for two years of fashion school, and they still cut better than anything i've tried. plus it comes with other useful stuff!! would 100% recommend

I've found plenty of decent machines at the thrift store. This year, I found a White for $15 and a Pfaff Hobby for $25.

If you don't know how to tell if it works, I suggest asking if they test their machines. I don't know whether the big chains do, but last year, after testing a Brother Project Runway machine for my daughter, I learned while purchasing it ($40, but half off, so $20) that store tests their machines. You're probably fine if they're testing it and have a decent exchange policy.

If they don't test, you don't know much about machines, but the price makes it worth taking a chance. At least check: that it sounds okay when it runs (grinding bad), that it has a power cord/presser foot (sometimes those are pricey), that the parts that should move do (e.g. try raising and lowering the needle and feed dogs), watch the feed dogs while stitching and holding reverse to make sure they change directions, try the straight and zigzag stitch (even without a needle you should be able to see whether the clamp is moving side to side), and look for obvious signs of damage (bent metal, cracked plastic, burn marks on the power cord). I also suggest verifying you can find a pdf copy of the manual if it doesn't have one. Then find out their return policy. Many thrift stores only do exchanges while some won't take back electronics.

Hi, Brooke. I’ve decided to start by hand sewing first, just so I can get more experience!
