Thanks Sir for this! Anything that helps one think more quickly on their feet while soloing over changes is great content.. Btw, I though the same thing about MM, that’s why we have to put the word Jazz in front of it to distinguish, but I can’t believe I never thought of just calling it DorianMaj7.
The genius of simplicity!!
Alright, have to go put on Mr. PC and jam with John..
See Ya🥳

The thing about the passing tone is that it voice leads into a strong chord tone. I've been thinking about the bebop based "standard" jazz approach to improv and in a lot of ways it strikes me as like baroque music with swing... it's all about the voice leading. I think dorian on a modal tune (like Maiden Voyage) is very different from dorian within a standards focused, ii-V7 sort of context.

I’m still struggling with theory, but your explanations are really helpful.

Ok, I might be stupid, but when he says that Dorian has no unsafe notes and then mentions the fourth as the unsafe one in Major...why is that? I figured it was because it leads back to the major third, which seems like a minor kind of resolution and not a major one, but why would the major 7th be considered safe then? Aren't you generally trying to avoid resolving back to one and if you are not, then how do you get out of the major 7th again? -And isn't the major 7th part of a diminished and not a major chord?

That was great. I cut some of the notes out. Ended with minor pentatonic.
