INTRODUCTION TO MODES: Dorian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Locrian & more

Modes are a really cool musical concept, and once you understand them and learn how to apply them your musical understanding will expand well beyond the usual major and minor scales.

In this lesson we look at the modes from the major scale. They include Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian. Each one has it's own use in different types of music - and they are all awesome!

Music theory has the weirdest learning curve. It seems so simple with only 12 keys per octave, but the order in which you hear it gives entirely different feelings. Insane how easy it is to sound off key, yet everything can technically be in key.

Phrygian = boldness, exuberance, passion, courage, leadership, but in excess pride, rashness, irascibility, violent anger.
Lydian = good cheer, optimism, sublimity, friendliness, laughter, love and song.
Dorian = sleepiness, lethargy, laziness, slowness, mental dullness, forgetfulness, calmness, internal equanimity, well being.
Mixolydian = solidity, firmness, steadfastness, rhythm, but with a certain indolent tenacity.

I like to understand the relationship between the modes by placing them in circle of fifths order beginning with Lydian then Ionian, Mixolydian, Dorian, Aeolian, Phrygian and Locrian.
Each mode in the sequence differs from the previous by flattening one note. #4->4, 7->b7, 3->b3, 6->b6, 2->b2, 5->b5. In this way they form a kind of continuum from brightest or most major to darkest or most minor. Dorian sits in the middle perfectly balanced and symmetrical.
