Thanks! I have researched a bit on my own for 5 years and no one can figure out what is the cause of my thrombocytosis. That being said, thanks for the simple visual of what’s going on. It was helpful to see it even if we still don’t know what’s going on.

My platelet count was in the millions! I saw a hematologist, so they took bone marrow( the worst, most painful thing I've experienced) and I was told I had essential thrombocytosis. I take 1000mg of hydroxyurea and aspirin daily now and will be for the rest of my life(I'm 43yo) it's a mutation in the bone marrow. JAK mutation. As long as you take care of yourself, and take your meds, you have a normal life..I'm fine.

Can menstruation be a cause for platelets to be slightly elevated. Had cbc just recently during my 2nd day of menses and my platelet is 403. All other labs like hematocrit, rbc etc are within normal range.

My Hematologist found I had extremely high platelets 1.3 million several years ago and put me on Hydrea. I took it for several years and my prescription kept having to be adjusted constantly. After a few years on it, my body no longer tolerate it. My doctor decided to get me into a clinical trial medication called Jakafi. It works like a dream! My platelets run steady at about 230. It's' very expensive, about $90 per pill, but if your insurance covers it or your doctor can get you into a financial assistance program and it is worth it.

93yr old woman w/COPD+Interstitial LD (diagnosed 6yrs ago) has experienced rapid decline since a case of bacterial pneumonia. Patient also has elevated platelets (diagnosed 17yrs ago with tests and spinal tap-no cause determined). Patient has fallen several times recently from passing out (viewed on video monitor), is breathless when sitting, and is having significant mental decline. However, SpO2 levels per oximeter shows 98% saturation consistently. Can elevated platelet count cause inaccurate reading? I feel patient (Grandma) would benefit from home oxygen treatment but oximeter results don’t support.

You forgot to mention primary ET is part of a myeloproliferative neoplasm or MPN for short. The World health organization (WHO) reclassified it as a cancer in 2008. There are three “driver” mutations discovered to date: Jak2, CALR and MPL. Hydroxurea is the old drug of choice bit is not for long term use for our chronic cancers. Nowadays Pegulated low dose weekly interferon is the drug of choice for our chronic cancer. I am 23 years diagnosed with ET.
