As a Veteran I always think of Deacons as the NCO’s of the Church.

Deacon comes from the Greek word diakonia, which means service. deacons, can preside over baptisms, weddings, and funerals. They can also do communion services. They are the link between the church and the families. At my church, we have a Deacon, who is for lack of a better word, Full-time. everyday, he is serving at mass. He did a baptism yesterday. He visits people in their homes and he does hospital rounds daily, so yes, being a Deacon can be a very busy life serving God though the church. Someone stated that deacons are NCOs like in the military. Deacons take care of church business and it's people.Deacons lead prayer grips and Bible Studies, etc. They are ordained clergy, ordained by a Catholic Bishop. I would definitely say a good Deacon is like a pillar in his local parish. Deacons are the ones who give get things done and can actually run the church. The priest is called to proclaim the Word of God and administer the 7 Sacraments. Both callings are very busy. Deacons are unique in that they have marriage obligations to take care of their families, about 50 to 80% still work. Full-time civilian jobs outside the church. So this may be the reason you do not see deacons, more involved than the priest. A Deacon in my parish presided over my wedding with my wife and also baptized one of my children. This particular Deacon is a true pillar in our church. He is definitely thought of as church clergy.I hope this clarifies the deaconate role more clearly.

I don’t like the term “permanent” deacon. It’s not like you stop being a deacon when you obtain higher status, the sacrament still leaves it’s indelible mark, just as ordination to the presbyterate, and episcopate leave their indelible marks. I feel like “terminal” diaconate would be more fitting.

I’m kind of confused are the seven Deacons or Evangelist, if you read Acts 21:8 it says Philip which was one of seven is an Evangelist.

I think you may have misspoke at 1:28 . I think you meant the "beginning of the second century". The beginning of the first century was when Jesus was growing up.
