Officers Use Deer Decoy to Stop Illegal Hunting | North Woods Law

Two conservation officers set up a deer decoy on the first day of rifle season, in the hopes that they might catch hunters shooting illegally from the road.

I was told once about a guy who got caught shooting a decoy from the road. He had his rifle confiscated and got a ticket. Two hours later he came back from the other way and shot it again. The officers asked why he would do that when need just gotten into trouble for shooting that decoy two hours earlier. He looked at them surprised and said, "No way! The one I shot earlier was on the other side of the road." They confiscated another rifle and he got another ticket.

I've always thought it would be hilarious to load up a decoy deer with like 50lbs of tannerite and sit it in a field and just wait for a poacher to come along decimate it. The reactions would be priceless.

He was upset not because of the ticket and getting caught but because he shot a fake deer AND got introuble 😂

Here in my area, they were using the fake deer quite a bit. A guy I know was with all his buddies drinking beer and he commented "it would take a dumb SOB to shoot a fake deer". A couple weeks later wardens had placed the large buck in Shenandoah National Park that had a road running through it. He was riding through there, spotted the buck, and fired away. When wardens told him to halt, he sped off and outran the rangers. They finally tracked the vehicle down and he lost the brand new four-wheel drive and all his weapons and had a big fine. He was also convicted before that of hunting out of a tree stand in the park. They placed cameras around the stand and had him on video sitting in the stand. Someone placed an old deer target in his yard one night and wrote on it, "don't shoot, I'm fake". I would have loved to have seen the expression on his face when he saw it the next morning. ROFLAO
