If your going to bait illegally(in theory)
1. Pumpkins aren't the best bait. Specially if theres other food around.
2. Don't pick a food that stands out for miles like pumpkins and yellow corn.
3. Get your story straight with your hunting partner.

The DNR fined my friend for baiting deer and took away his tags. There was a mineral lick block about 70 yards from his tree stand on the other side of a hill, not visible from where he was hunting. He told the DNR he didn't put it there, but didn't know who did, and asked why he was getting fined when it was so far away from his stand and out of his vision. They basically told him that there is no limit for how far away a bait is from where you're hunting, if they deem it's in the general vicinity and could potentially benefit you, it counts as baiting.

He went to court the other day to fight it, i need to ask him how it went.
