Bariatric Surgery and Acid Reflux 💭

Keep in mind acid reflux/heartburn symptoms when picking a weight loss surgery.

Even if you don't have heartburn symptoms, they can develop after surgery, especially sleeve gastrectomy. Evidence shows that 8-10% of individuals that don't have heartburn can develop some symptoms after a sleeve. These can be very minor symptoms, or in rare cases, more severe.

The good news is that weight loss can actually improve heartburn in many cases since losing abdominal weight helps take pressure off the gastroesophageal junction and diaphragm. I've had patients with reflux ahead of a sleeve with a hiatal hernia, get their hernia fixed at the time of surgery, and have complete resolution of symptoms after surgery.

The safest surgery to have done if you have reflux and are worried about it getting worse is a gastric bypass. It will divert 95% of the stomach acid away from your esophagus and is actually the surgical procedure of choice for prior gastric sleeve patients who have debilitating acid reflux.
