What is Tazarotene?

Tazarotene is a third generation prescription topical retinoid. Primarily used for 2 conditions. Acne and Plaque Psoriasis. But nevertheless, you often find it used in many off label conditions as well since it can help with photoaged and photodamaged skin, boosting collagen to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and discoloration.

Tazarotene Gel vs Foam vs Cream

Now, tazoretene comes in different forms and strengths. You got the gel form which is Tazorac, the foam which is Fabior, and the cream which is Avage. You also have the 0.045% lotion called Arazlo for those experiencing acne, lets say as early as 9 years old and older. The tazorac cream which is probably the one youre using, comes in 2 strengths. 0.05% and 0.1% which can be used for plaque psoriasis. And the 0.1% to be used in acne. The gel form is usually used if your psoriasis affects 20% or less of your BSA.

How to Use Tazarotene

The best way to apply any of these forms is exactly as your doctor has told you to. It comes with a leaflet, that I highly encourage you to read as well, since there is so much info with it.

Making sure you dont use the foam near a fire since it is flammable, how it increases sun sensitivity making you more prone to sunburns, and even sometimes being prescribed a corticosteroid along with it to reduce the skin irritation that sometimes develops from using only a retinoid. Also to discontinue if pregnancy occurs.

How Long Does Tazarotene Take to Work? Tazarotene Combining

For psoriasis, within 1 to 4 weeks of using tazarotene, most people see a 50% reduction in psoriasis symptoms. And the Improvements in skin redness, can actually take longer than this, but the Improvements do persist for up to 3 months. And as for acne, improvements are seen at the 4 week mark, so itll take about a month to notice a big difference. Because Tazarotene is selective for two types of retinoic acid receptors, RAR-gamma and RAR-β. Just Like all retinoids, it affects the ability of keratinocytes in the epidermis to proliferate and differentiate.

And in terms of how long you should be on it for, typically with Tazorac it is used for up to 12 weeks for acne and up to 12 months for plaque psoriasis. But your doctor may recommend that you use it longer.

During this entire treatment period, if I can leave you with 3 tips to maximize your success with tazoretene.

1: Use a gentle skincare routine. No harsh soaps or excessive cleansing.
2: Use oil free skin care products, and ones that are noncomedogenic which means they wont clog pores.
3: Dont pick or squeeze your skin during the treatment process. Doing so may spread bacteria, which could cause more swelling and make the condition worse.

Tazarotene Dry Skin

I think one of the main feedbacks Ive heard with patients on tazoratene is the dry skin that comes with it. Scratching can also trigger a flare-up in people who have plaque psoriasis, so have your doctor know all the skincare products you're using to see if there are any that are adding to the dryness, so you can potentially avoid them, secondly drink plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout this process, and lastly, get a humidifier for the home which is designed to put moisture back in the air, which helps with dry skin.

It is incredibly strong. The instructions say to use it everyday and if i did that i would have burned my face off. I got it for acne. Started once a week...to twice then to every 3 days. Never was able to use it more than that. Acne is cleared for now. It is incredibly drying.

It’s better than retin A! I am using only .05 right now but I’m going to be getting one percent soon, I have to find a new doctor because my current one won’t prescribe more than .05 so I will be switching doctors!

I used tazarotene gel 0.1% for 4 months daily no issues. Then my skin suddenly couldn’t tolerate it anymore which is weird :/ I’m back to tretinoin cuz it feels gentler but I wanna pump back up to taz any suggestions?

Thank you for talking about this! It’s hard finding detailed information about tazarotene compared to tretinoin. Just started taz 0.1% cream and have been using tretinoin for over a year. Taz is definitely not irritating compared to tretinoin. Idk if it’s because taz is a 3rd generation retinoid compared to tret which is a 1st generation retinoid?

I’ve also had people tell me that taz is less irritating but it can sneak up on you if you overuse it in the beginning since it shows little to no irritation on the skin. How true is that?

Can you possibly do a video comparing 1st and 3rd gen retinoids and how they differ?

Is tazorac gel or cream better/more effective for anti-aging? And can I use 0.1% starting out in gel or would that be too drying?

Hey doctor, do you think Tazarotene gel 0.1% would be good for facial keratosis Pilaris rubra? Could it completely unclog all the Kp on face since it is so powerful and used for plaque psoriasis? I also seen a study on KPRF about topical sirolimus 1% cream, but I also hear a 2% cream exists also. Is Aklief stronger than Tazarotene since it’s the newest on the market? Please reply kprf is a Devastating diagnosis!!

I’ve been using the taz cream 0.05 but now my insurance doesn’t cover it and only covers the gel form, is there much of a difference between cream and gel? Have heard gel can be irritating
