In the first of this ‘Back to the thesis’ series from Nature Video, the director of the National Institutes of Health, Francis Collins, takes us back to the 1970s and his PhD - a time when his interests were less biomedical, and more quantum chemical.

I’ve always found it very interesting that his PhD is in physical chemistry, but yet he’s the NIH director. He’s had a very eclectic career.

Interesting scientist. Fully agree and appreciate his perspective. However, these important scientist also create the modern systems of research that make of universities and research institutes work like markets economies. Like markets, the new manager ( less scientist) choose projects not in accordance with values of curiosity but instead of profitability.
