The skeletal system of the human body is made up by bones providing not only stabilization and rigidity, but also storage of micronutrients and the bone marrow. They consist of calcified connective tissue and are also involved in the production of red and white blood cells.
The bones of the human skeleton consist of several parts and come in various shapes and sizes in order to fulfill their functions.
There is an overall amount of ca. 206 bones in the adult human body, ranging from the smallest in the middle ear to the largest, the femur. In this video tutorial we explore the different bone types in the skeleton and find out examples for bones belonging to each type.
- five types of bones
- long bones (e.g. humerus, tibia, femur, ulna) and their parts
- short bones (e.g. carpal and tarsal bones)
- flat bones (e.g. skull bones, ribs, sternum, scapulae)
- irregular bones (e.g. vertebrae, hip bones)
