Dave there is a method to switch from an application to another one without press the home button! It requires the 3D touch and you need to press in the very LEFT of the display with a certain amount of force, after you do that swipe slowly to the center and that's it!

I love the home button the overall snappiness of the iPhone 7 plus. My jet black model finally came in after a month of waiting so I haven't had too much time with it. But so far I'm enjoying it.
