Everything you need to know about The Beatles' "All You Need Is Love." |

"Our World" coincided with the height of the Beatles' popularity and influence, following the release of Sgt. Pepper. Even The Beatles, who were seldom overawed by anything, were a bit bomb-happy about the challenge of coming up with something good in such a short time. They worked best under pressure, and the track was written especially for the broadcast.

Brian Epstein stated the following regarding "All You Need Is Love": 🗣️ "I've never had a moment's worry that they wouldn't come up with something marvelous. This is an inspired song, because they wrote it for a worldwide program and they really wanted to give the world a message. It could hardly have been a better message. It is a wonderful, beautiful, spine-chilling record."

A nostalgic picture - Summer of love, the Beatles at the peak of their creativity, Lennon's last moments as the group's leader and the imminent death of the band's manager.

I saw the show live that night. To this day, All You Need is Love is my favorite Beatles song.

The chord sequence in this song still blows me away. The fact that they build up a V (D) chord only for it to have a key change in D major is just genius. And how it just goes back to G major via the III-vi (B7-Em). Simply mind-blowing stuff for such a simple song.

Gus does a beautiful job of narration, but the new voice was VERY well done! Now I want to listen to this song again❤

This arguably could have been the absolute peak of the Beatles. However, a couple of hundred thousand people didn't get a chance to see it live in the central Ohio area. I was 16 in 1967 and at the time there was only four TV channels to watch. The channel that would have played it was a PBS channel. Instead of carrying the Our World program, they opted to play an opera singer instead. They promised to record it and play it the next day which would be like recording the Super Bowl and playing it the next day after the game was over. After all this time I'm still pissed. Lol

I was born in 1970 and declared them my favorite group before I was ten, and they still are, and my earliest impression of the Beatles really centers around this song. It felt like the quintessential Beatles song, and everything else they were before and after can be viewed through this song, its message, and the images that come from the recording. If that makes sense. It's not their best song, but it's the most Beatlesque.

On the subject of "All You Need Is Love, " Hunter Davies once asked John Lennon about the song title and John explained that the title could be taken in two ways. At one level "All You Need Is Love" could mean that love is the most important thing in the world, but it could also mean that love is the one thing you're lacking and haven't got.

Paul’s song was All Together Now. They thought it was too much like a nursery rhyme and went with AYNIL.

Gosh i thought i knew all the details about the Beatles and this song after 40 odd years of listening and reading and watching documentaries, But there's a lot of new info here for sure.
On the song i always thought John Lennon was basically taking the piss, and mocking the hippy free love peace stuff there. Certainly lots of their stuff from 67 seems critical of the peace and love and global world kind of views. Listen to those songs they're mostly about their children hood in Liverpool and very traditional English life. Like I think Paul McCartney says about Magical Mystery Tour as a story about one of those popular holiday outings back in the day. On a coach with a mystery destination, that always turned out to be Blackpool.
Thanks for the vid. Way back in the day, my dad was a trumpet player in a dance band, that played Glen Miller stuff, and they supported The Beatles in a concert in October 1963 at Trentham Gardens in Stoke on Trent. By all accounts it turned into a sort of riot with fans going crazy scaling the building and climbing in through upper floor windows and stuff. It was massively reported in the papers for a couple of days just before their televised London Palladium gig. Everyone thinks Beatlemania began either earlier in Liverpool or after from the Palladium gig, but it was at Trentham Gardens October 1963. There is a few minutes of Super 8 film of the gig on YouTube. My mum was their too pregnant with me. I was born in December.
Thanks for the great vid.
