Running with Asthma - How to Run with Asthma

In this video, my brother Jewelian and I go for a run. We just got the GoPro Hero 7 and are using it for the first time. It's getting cooler now in October, which means exercising outdoors has the potential to trigger my asthma.

🩺 Ask Doctor Hansen:

---------------------------------------------------------

Activity is good for your asthma.
It might help to know that getting your heart rate up can actually improve your asthma symptoms. Here's how: Raising your heart rate regularly boosts your lung power, increases stamina, and reduces breathlessness.

Omg, I just saw myself in this video. Being a dentist, I am always envious about other health care professionals about their health and ability to exercise, unlike me, who always needs an inhaler even to run for a short distance. I lived my entire life thinking I am not perfect. In fact, I felt as I don't deserve to be in this profession, but your video made me feel so positive and embrace myself and taught me how to manage it efficiently without compromising in our daily life. Thanks for sharing this video doc.

I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 38. I thought I was having panic attacks or cardiac issues for years when I would wake up with chest tightness. The problem is that when I have an asthma attack, I don’t always wheeze, and my oxygen level stays in the normal range. My lungs just get very quiet. After being dismissed by several doctors it took one ER doctor that listened to finally figure things out. It wasn’t until I was treated and my lungs opened up a bit that he said he could finally hear some wheezing. Asthma can be diagnosed at any age. My advice to everyone is that if you are having trouble breathing, chest tightness or a cough that lingers, get medical attention. Don’t assume it is a panic attack or all in your head.

Before covid 19 a kid in my class thought that my inhaler was a vape. That was an interesting conversation... but it was definitely better than paying attention to the teacher

I got diagnosed this year with asthma, one year after having my first child. I went from athlete to bedridden. I was a dancer and now I barely can do much. I'm struggling how to live my life with asthma. It's good to find your channel. I'm working with my Doctor, but I just need to see hope that... my old version of self isn't completely obsolete. That the new me, with asthma can still be active and do what I love.

Thank you for making this. I really appreciate it. My Dr said if I lost weight my asthma will go away, (I just got DX’d this morning..) because my BMI is 30.... but I work out for 2 hours a day, 4/5 days a week. Every week. I’ve had asthma all my life without realizing it. I just thought it was normal to have trouble breathing when you work out. 🤷🏼‍♀️
But I hiked a mountain yesterday and almost broke and called the medics at the top because I literally couldn’t breath. It was crazy. Today I finally cracked and went to the dr and now I feel like a tub of lard. 😢
All I keep reading is that if I lost weight then my asthma will go away. Which I know won’t work because I’ve always had issues breathing when I workout. Especially in cold weather! Thank you for saying that!!
I wonder if the more asthma attacks you have... the more weight you gain? I can’t find anything on it.
I work out very hard constantly and eat 1, 200 healthy calories and I gained 10lbs this year. For no reason. I hate it! 🤬 I was supposed to lose 20 not gain 10! Grr! Lol
Anyway, thanks for this video! Really helped!

I've had asthma since I was 18 months old. Im on breo inhaler once a day. I take my albeuterol before running. I just ran 5 miles at a 9 minute pace. I always dreaded running. I set small goals and progressed. Your lungs will adapt. Start small at 1 mile, then 1.5 miles and so on. Trust me when I tell you my exercise induced asthma had me in the hospital most of my adolescence. I usually take normals breaths followed by a few deep breaths with deep exhales. Discover your own breathing rhythm

I have an albuterol inhaler and it sometimes seems to irritate my lungs even more!

When I run I can’t carry on a conversation and I’ve had to make all kinds of adjustments because I just can’t push like others. Cold weather is super hard and I try to breathe warmer air like in my hoodie or something. This makes it look easier.

My asthma is absolutely horrible. I can walk and breathe fine, but as soon as I try to jog, nope instant wheezing.
