Bundeswehr Inspector General Carsten Breuer has warned of the growing military threat Russia poses to the West. "We are seeing that the Russian army is orienting itself towards the West," he said in an interview with the Sächsische Zeitung newspaper, as quoted by the dpa news agency. According to Breuer, in 5-8 years the Russian Armed Forces will be staffed and equipped in such a way that an attack on NATO territory will be possible . In this regard, the highest-ranking Bundeswehr officer referred to his own analysis, information from the intelligence services and armed forces of Germany's allies, as well as statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He pointed out that the Russian army receives between 1,000 and 1,500 tanks annually, while the five largest European NATO countries have only half that number combined. In particular, the Bundeswehr has about 300 combat tanks, the German general noted.

"If we add to this potential the intention that can be clearly read in Putin's statements, then this should alarm us. My task is to think about such a worst-case scenario," he further emphasized. According to Breuer, for Germany this means the need to prepare for a possible attack by the Russian Federation in 5 years. At the same time, not everyone has yet realized the new threat situation, he added.

Commenting on the situation in Ukraine, the Inspector General of the Bundeswehr noted that he does not expect significant changes in the combat zones in the near future.

Fresh paint on a T55 doesn’t make it “new.” 😂

The only way Russia can acquire 1000 - 1500 tanks a years is to refurbish T-62's & T-54/55's and after 2025 most of the serviceable ones will be gone. Then the Russians can only manufacture 200 - 300 T-90's a year max, thus leaving them to import tanks from either Maoist China, or India, both of whom make substantially inferior tanks to what the US, France, Germany, South Korea, Japan or the UK make.

Russia can't source wheel bearings for their IL-76 cargo planes but they are gonna crank out 1, 500 MBTs a year? BS!

ROFL.. Well, they could attack. But it would be a bigger military disaster than Ukraine has been. Remember, NATO had a roughly 3:1 advantage in most areas BEFORE they invaded Ukraine, over the last two years plus, Ukraine has been decimating Russian personnel and military hardware. I'm not sure what that 3:1 ratio would be now, but I'd say it's likely to be more like 4:1 at worst. Russia cannot take on NATO in a conventional war and win. The Poles alone would rip them apart (and they really WANT to rip them apart) when the rest of NATO showed up Russia would either need to go nuclear, with disastrous consequences for everyone, or back off. There is no means for Russia to turn any attack on NATO into a victory.

Misleading title….. 85% of its tank ‘production’ is recommissioned soviet era equipment…. Russia’s tank fleet is highly polarised between T5#, T6# and very few T90m ….. T72 & 80 are almost extinct…..

German Bundeswehr just ordered 123 new Leopard tanks (newest pattern). Smaller Czech Republic 76. Slovakia receives F16 now. In total 643 new Leopards have been ordered in Europe. And that’s just Leopards. russia is completely toast if they choose to go ahead.

Let us all give the Russians the benefit of the doubt and believe they are producing 1500 tanks per annum.
Firstly we do have to ask how many of these 1500 tanks are new, how many are reactivated old stocks and how many are repaired and reconstituted from war damaged tanks.
Secondly since the start of the illegal invasion of Ukraine the Russian tank asset base has and is being significantly attrited. Overall since the beginning of the illegal invasion to the 24 July 2024 the Russian tank force has been losing an average of 9.4 tanks per day, which is equivalent to 3, 436 per year.
In Sum, if the figure of 1500 tanks produced per year is true then the news is blank for Russia. 1500 tanks is a mere 44% of their annual losses. But we sort of know that many (maybe the majority) of these 1500 tanks are not new, far from it and the Soviet stocks they are been drawn from for major refurbishment are dwindling rather quickly, so 1500 may represent the peak of achievement and that will not be sustained.

But Russia loses twice that everyday. That’s why you see them putting 50 year old tanks in the field. Also their tanks are inferior and with sanctions not a match to NATO tanks. Let’s talk about their crews. Their best is gone and training for new crews are weak or nonexistent.
