Cordless Drill Restoration Video

In this video I restored a Dewalt xrp 18v drill that I got from japan recycle shop only 10$. I need to buy new battery 25$ and battery charger 28$. I totally spent 63$ for this project. After the restoration, I used it for a while, it works very well but a little bit heavy for me. It weights 2kg.

I took apart my 18v DeWalt drill and spread everything on a picnic table with a huge paper tablecloth. I labeled each grouping of parts as I went and meticulously serviced, cleaned, replaced worn parts and labeled the tablecloth for reassembly.
Just before I could begin the repairs, my 2 year old Black Lab chased a squirrel out of the yard and dragged the table cloth with all of my parts across the lawn with him.
My new DeWalt Drill cost me $179 and I’m still mowing over missing parts strewn throughout my lawn.

I admire this kind of dedication to saving something. We throw away and waste a lot of useful things way too easily. Great job. 👏🏻👍🏻

Kinda happy to see a channel like this. Looking at fixing something instead of saying it doesn't work anymore, throw it out. A good step towards less waste. Thanks for the content

Outstanding. So many parts. At least you have your video to refer to. I cringed when you put them all in the cleaner/degreaser. Very, very well done. New battery requirement is no surprize. Thanks for NOT having music.

This is like breaking down an vehicle transmission, and putting everything back together. This gentleman is a pro doing this .

Wow. It's a lot more complicated inside than I had imagined. Good job you have a reference of how to put it back together.

Used one of these heavy beasts through my electrical apprenticeship. Affectionately referred to it as “The Wrist Breaker”. Drilling out 6” soffit can lights, if you weren’t prepared, it would take you for one hell of a ride.

Outstanding! It seems like you know this drill inside out - Dewalt . So many parts and their assembly could make the engineers who designed this dizzy! But you did it in a spectacular manner. Way to go!

I restored one of these! I love how the gearbox and brushes can be removed so easily. You can still get brushes for these, too!

Trouble with mine was the torque ring was busted - the slip ring was so worn down from constant years of use that it only does drill and hammer mode.

Perfect! Love to see you extract every smallest piece then restore it. Perfection of restoration!

Love to see details of chemicals used. Fantastic video, didn't know how much mechanical detail goes into a drill!

Nice job!
Going to go out and buy a new one now since this is beyond my level of patience to attempt.

Considering that drill goes for 150 USD without the battery I think you got a great bargain, nice job, never realized how many little gears there was inside. Thanks for sharing!

I've just bought a faulty Hitachi drill to work on. Your video has gave me confidence to give it a go.

I have that drill in a combo package with a 5-3/8" circular saw, a reciprocating saw, 2 batteries plus charger in a hard case. The Ni-Cd batteries are harder to find but DeWalt has an adaptor transitioning to the new Lithium-ion. That was an amazing successful restoration that AvE should watch!

I don't care what anyone says, the old dewalt drills xrp stuff is the best for reliability, I still use dewalt xrp dcd950 hammer drill and my dewalt dc825 impact driver on a daily basis at my job, I've been using them for many years, they always work and never die, I only had to replace one battery 5 years ago due to water damage. I used a dewalt dcd996 hammer drill from december 2017 till June 2018 and it died, somthing on a microchip board blew up while I was drill a 1inch pice of oak with a 3/8" drill bit that was fresh. I switched back to my trusty old dcd950 and never had an issue since. My old dc825 impact driver has never given any issues what so ever. Great restoration on this drill it looks like a dc925.
