When I vent to one of my bsf's after finally getting up the confidence she either can't pay attention or doesn't understand I'm upset about it (adhd, autism, depression, anxiety... I also hate venting to her bc I feel like I put too much pressure)

I'm 50/50 vent but I'll ease some tension because venting can get super real for the person expressing themselves. Moderation and knowing how the person is actually key to a successful vent session so no one feels overwhelmed or like they burdened someone 😊

No because I genuinely struggle with having sympathy for people but I’ve never said these things to someone who trusted me enough to confide in me like that (or who shared their experience online). Thats just messed up. I mean honestly, just because you dont have empathy or dont personally find that experience to be a big deal doesn’t mean you need to treat someone like shit and undermine the pain or discomfort that the experience caused.

People who don’t know how to deal with or process feeling sad for others try to avoid feeling empathic at the expense of their external sympathy. They shatter their ability to be there for someone because they can’t handle the guilt or sorrow that comes with listening to another’s hardships.
Laughing in the face of someone’s sadness despite not truly finding it funny is a defense mechanism. It’s an unhealthy one and shouldn’t be encouraged or excused.

People need to practice balancing what they need for their own emotions and what their friends need from them for their emotions (with the expectation that if they help out their friends, their friends should help them too)
