The Bloody Story of the Elder Wand (All Owners) - Harry Potter Explained

Hey everyone,

Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In this video, I’m going to be discussing one of the Deathly Hallows, in fact- I’m going to be discussing what is arguably the most important of the Hallows - at least in terms of the Harry Potter story. I am of course talking about the Elder Wand.

The elder wand is undeniably the most powerful wand in the Harry Potter universe. It was the first Hallow created, made by Death himself, and no other wand is its equal. The Elder Wand is made of elder wood, and it’s core is the tail hair of a Thestral. It’s 15” long and has carvings down its length that resemble clusters of elderberries. With the elder wand, witches and wizards are able to effortlessly produce intensely powerful magic that others could only dream of. Possession of the wand also meant that you could produce magic which was not otherwise possible, including things like mending other wands- something that could not normally be achieved through magic.

The elder wand, being one of the deathly hallows, is commonly associated with the tale of three brothers- Antioch, Cadmus and Ignotus.

“The eldest brother, a combative man, asked for a wand more powerful than any in existence. Death granted his wish by fashioning the Elder Wand from a branch of a nearby elder tree standing on the banks of the river. The second brother, an arrogant man, chose to further humiliate death, and asked for the power to recall the deceased from the grave. Death granted his wish by crafting the Resurrection Stone from a stone picked from the riverbank. The third and youngest brother, who was the most humble and wise, did not trust Death and asked for something to enable him to go forth without Death being able to follow. A reluctant Death, most unwillingly, handed over a part his own Invisibility cloak. The three brothers took their prizes and soon went on their separate ways.”

And that was how the Deathly Hallows were born- however, this was not the last time that death and the three brothers would meet. Each brother, under their own unique circumstances, ended up losing their life and met death once more.

So, Antioch was the first owner- but one thing that I thought was worth mentioning is that Albus Dumbledore never believed that the wand was actually made by Death. Dumbledore always assumed that the wand was in fact created by the eldest of the Peverell brothers, Antioch himself. However, regardless of who created the fabled wand - the fact remains- Antioch was killed and the wand no longer belonged to him. So, where did the wand go next?

According to Xenophilius Lovegood- "The bloody trail of the Elder Wand is splattered across the pages of Wizarding history."

After Antioch died- the wand was passed around from wizard to wizard-usually by violent means- which led to the wand acquiring a few different names “the deathstick” and “the wand of destiny”- an omen of death that alludes to the ‘bloody trail’ mentioned by Lovegood.

I like how the Elder Wand refuses to give you extra power during a duel and makes you win on your own ability to test your worthiness

I wish Harry Potter was back.I still miss the story. It was simply the best series. The amount of suspense in it was insane. I remember myself reading the book and watching Harry Potter movies and getting chills on my back. Nostalgia :(

Grindelwald lost possession and true mastery of the Elder Wand when Newt disarmed him in the fight at the station in New York in FB1 (1926). That made Newt the wand's true master. Tina summoned the wand to herself before it hit the platform, but didn't disarm anyone in the process - it had already left Grindelwald's hand - so she didn't become true master. Grindelwald regained possession of the Elder Wand when he escaped from MACUSA's captivity, but he is no longer it's true master. Kama used Expeliarmus to disarm Newt in the sewers in Paris in FB2 (1927). So as of the end of FB2, Kama is the Elder Wand's current true master.

I'd say the invisibility cloak was the most important hallow in the Harry Potter series. Just due to how many times Harry used it through out the series in times he wouldn't have dotten out of without it

him: "the elder wand is the most important hallow"
the cloak of invisibility: *helps legit every single character throughout all seven books and continued to be used even after the books and was the reason they were able to do 99% of what they did* "am i a joke to you?"

I always wonder why Harry after repairing his impossibly broken wand, why didn't he try to heal Neville Longbottom's parents with the Elder wand?

Very interesting to think about how death basically cheated them and in turn got even more people dying over the thousands of years getting a lot more then just 3 people out of the whole ordeal. Good Video

I find the wands to witches/wizards in Harry Potter to be strongly parallel to the lightsabers in Star Wars. In HP, the wand with a particular core chooses the wizard. In SW, the kyber crystal that powers a lightsaber chooses the Jedi. Both can be seen as general weapons for their respective individual, but it becomes the true and full extension of the one it's destined for.

And then the Elder Wand - the most powerful wand. Changes owners through disarm (or killing, depending on the situation). Very similar to the Darksaber.

All this, fantasized by just one person. That's incredibly amazing.

Here’s a crazy theory. The elder wand is a naturally powerful wand, yes. It is truly at its peak power when used by its true owner. A wand that can not be beaten. But what if the true owner is and ALWAYS ever was the first Peveral brother? The wand was technically never “won” from him. It was stolen. And not stolen from an owner while in conflict like harry and draco, stolen unawares from a dead owner. So the ownership died with the first owner, but the legend lived on with the subsequent possessors.

As much as I like the idea of the wands power breaking, I'd just like to point out that in order for Harry to achieve this he'd effectively have to make sure he was never disarmed EVER for the rest of his life or the wands allegiance would change. The only way to counteract that would be to disarm or kill the person who disarmed him before they were disarmed or killed by someone else. Pretty difficult task considering he chose to become an auror. In this sense, I did sort've prefer the movie ending where he snaps the wand in half as that way the wands power is truly broken. My only issue is that they never showed him repairing the holly wand

How exactly did Grindlewald gain true ownership of the wand? Is stealing it considered “besting” Grogorovich??
