Should You Quit Learning Russian Language

This is something that I would advise myself if I were in doubt about learning a language. Hopefully it can be helpful to you too!

Questions:
1. What made you start learning?
2. What makes you keep going?
3. What are the benefits of learning Russian?
4. Is the sacrifice worth the outcome?

Learning a new language is a never ending process. I've been learning english since I was 8 years old and now I'm 22 years old, and I never stop learning english. Same with Russian language, I will never quit.

Well for me it is like an obsession. I like the melody of the russian language. I also think that it is a very mysterious language. Every time I learn a new word or a new rule about russian I feel like I am one step closer to a very big secret that will be clear for me. I just need to learn it. :))

It’s great the some people think that you are a native English speaker! Motivation is key and as you pointed out trying to discover why you lost motivation (got discouraged) One concept is to find how to make learning fun each day so the reward is not just at “the end”

I started in 2018 as a hobby since discovering its beauty in music. Since then, I have had several durations of "giving up" and was intimidated o go back because all that I forgot. Well, I realized it's not always a linear process! and lately I have spent more time on Duo than anything because in the end it gives me happiness and fulfillment. With how rocky the world is lately, it helps me cope and keep my mind busy, and also not rot my brain watching TV shows relentlessly. I started writing russian this week and the only thing I regret is not starting sooner! Thank you for your videos, you helped me realized it's become more than just wanting to understand lyrics but possibly preparing for a future in Russia! :)

Wonderful video, thanks! I stopped learning Russian about 16-17 yrs ago after I travelled to Russia three times. What little I learned was still useful for me in being able to get by, like reserving rooms in hotels, buying train tickets, ordering food, etc. I started to re-learn Russian 2 months ago when I decided that travelling around Eastern Europe (incl. Russia, Belarus and Ukraine) would be my priority in this new decade (despite COVID-19), including countries where it might be understood as a second language, at least for the older people. I went to Serbia last December - relearning the Cyrillic alphabet helped.

This was moving, and solidifying. My life, and the lives of people within my sphere will benefit through the effort in ways that can't even be predicted; much like how YOUR choice, Фёдор, to master English as indeed you have has had an altering influence within the cosmos of these many thousands of people pursuing this common goal.

My native language is Spanish, I came to the USA at the age of 24, now I am 60, and I have master English at a very high professional level; then I heard from experts that learning a new language helps to delay Alzheimer disease; so here I am. After two years, I now can read in Russian 60%, understand 30%, speak 15 %. All this studying on my own using Y-T videos here and there. I picked Russian for its uniqueness and interesting culture; not knowing the level of difficulty, but now, I love it! The concepts and philosophy about life, embedded into the language, are very fascinating to me. My goal is to master it as soon as possible. Thank you Fedor for the encouragement. Your lessons are great! Keep it up!

I really appreciate you being honest with us in this video. I think most teachers just say “no, don’t quit!” But they never want to look at it critically. Watching this made me realize that learning Russian is one of the few things I wanted to do just for myself. And for that reason, I am going to continue learning. However, life is busy and I can’t study as hard as I was. At least for a while.

We are happy that you have made that sacrifice for us! I have a dual degree in Russian Studies and English Literature. Although I can speak Russian, I dont feel fluent in it. Your tutorials are a big boost for me! Cpacebo!

Good content as always. I'm studying Russian at University and I'm following this channel because offer more details than the books I have. At the beginning was very hard to memorise cases and in particular I'm still struggling with participles, but once you study the rules, increase your vocabulary and study the words with the respective cases it will be more easy to understand and do many exercises as you can. Thx again for your lessons :)

I’m trying to learn purely for a hobby. I find it mentally stimulating and although it’s difficult and frustrating I think you have to try and enjoy the process. The difficulty is a reason enough for me since it’s a challenge.

We never stop! Your videos are amazing! These are the best Russian learning videos on YouTube, hands down! Thank you. I wake up and the first things I think of are what I’ve learned from these videos :) I started learning Russian because I heard a song while living in Turkey called Медина. Do you know it? I heard this song and listened to it probably a thousand times, then for that following week watched A TON of Russian learning videos. First I learned the Cyrillic alphabet then went on to your videos. Why am I learning? Honestly I’m the type of person that loves to experience other cultures. Hence why I’m here in Turkey. Russian has so many brilliant thinkers, philosophers, mathematicians and so on...Yes of course it’s worth it and despite the difficulty for me it has always been a delightful challenge and never depletes my motivation but rather adds to it. Very happy learning Russian, thank you for these videos. I love them so much. благодарю вас ❤️ YouTube is amazing because you never know whose lives you touched. Keep going! You’re awesome 😚

Hello Fedor! Great video. Of course, the answers are different for everyone. The benefits for me are still worth it. Although I can't devote as much time as I used to, I remind myself that there is no finish line. I have learned to be happy with giving it as much time as I can. Sometimes I get better fast, other times it has to wait. But I find that every new breakthrough ( "oh, that's how that works!") is enough to keep me going. It helps that I now have a HelloTalk friend who I just adore and can't wait to meet! Still one of the most interesting and rewarding things I've attempted to do. Keep up the good work!
