:50, "off the bat" I love how people all over use terms that come from baseball without even knowing it comes from baseball.

If you haven't already, you could react to George Carlin: Baseball v. Football. It's a nice tongue-in-cheek look at the USA's two most popular sports.

Basically, what they have in common is extreme specialization, and not much else.

This morning I was taking a walk and I talked to this one guy who was going to coach the "Mill Valley Youth Football League". So, because I'm a smartass, I asked him if it was Rugby Football, Gridiron Football, Australian Rules Football, or Association Football (AKA Soccer). All in fun of course, because the only fields around were soccer ones so it was obvious to both of us...I just think it's a little pretentious of a wealthy suburb to call it that when basically everyone else in this country knows it by the name it DOESN'T share with any other football code.
__
If you want insight into the American mindset, baseball is probably a good bet. If there's a more specialized sport in terms of who gets to play where and why, I'm not aware of any. Lots of other sports have this of course, but baseball seems to do it the most.
Here's kind of a flowchart for how you are channeled into a baseball position:
Are you a left- or right-handed thrower? If you're right-handed you can play anywhere; if you're left-handed you can play outfield, first base, or pitcher. Do you have a really strong arm? You should try pitching or outfield (or if right-handed you can try third base, shortstop, or catcher). Do you have a REALLY strong arm? Try to be a pitcher. Do you have a really devious mind and a competitive streak? Pitcher or catcher. Do you have either really good empathy, great sporting IQ, or both? Catcher, unless your "stuff" is outstanding and / or you really want to be a pitcher instead. Do you have great reaction time? Infielder. Do you have awesome body control and a great vertical leap? Third base, shortstop, or second base. Can you sprint really fast? Outfielder. Are you a big target with long arms and legs? First base.

Breaking it all down, some positions require a lot of long throws. Some positions require a lot of fast running, while others just require your reaction speed be fast. Catcher and pitcher used to collectively be called the "battery"; not sure if that term's still in use. The catcher is the one who calls for the pitches, so he's familiar with the pitchers he's working with. The pitcher is ultimately in charge of the pitches he throws, but a smart pitcher will pay attention to the catcher...bad catchers don't make it to elite levels, and there are quite a few catchers at that level who aren't great hitters but still make the pitchers and teams better. The only positions you can get away with being a bad hitter are pitcher (obviously), catcher, and sometimes 3rd base or shortstop (if you're a phenomenal fielder). Catchers CAN be left-handed but rarely are; most batters are right-handed so the throw to second isn't as easy...it's not insurmountable of course because right-handed catchers do it all the time when there's a left-handed batter, but if you grow up with a good baseball IQ and a strong arm and you're left-handed you probably will have been channeled into pitching. Many outfielders, if they're not so fast as they once were but still a legit threat behind the plate, got moved to first as they aged. Not on the clubs with great first-basemen already, but it was a thing that happened. The DH was another place you'd put a power hitter who still had the eye and the reactions but had lost a step or two. Don't know how common either is nowadays but it used to be a thing.

Hitting is either for contact (to get on base) or power (to drive in runs); ideally both, but most will lean towards one or the other style.

Traditionally in a batting lineup, the fastest guy on the team bats first, and hopefully is a good contact hitter (and / or good at drawing walks). The second slot is the best contact hitter you've got (for average; in other words getting more base hits than anyone else). Third slot is your guy who's got a lot of power and hopefully a decent average too; when he hits the ball it goes a long way. Fourth and fifth are your guys who aren't quite so good at hitting for average but legit threats to put the ball in the bleachers (if you have any). 6-9 in the lineup depend on your strategy, only commonality is that your #9 guy is your worst hitter. This is the "traditional" way to do stuff; every manager is different, and who you have on your team will affect your strategy as well. If you've got a lot of contact hitters who are legit base-stealing threats, your strategy to win games is a little different than if you've got a lot of power hitters.

This was a really bad collection of catches. I think it was probably missing the top 20 plays in history.

All these catches are almost all from like the last 10-20 years only. The greatest catch ever is Willie Mays at Polo Grounds in the 54 series. They didn't even throw in Kirby Puckett in game 6 to save the 91 world series. And yeah, glove goes on your non throwing hand.
