The athletic skills involved in baseball are incredibly amazing, more so, I believe, than other popular sports. To be able to keep your eye on a ball being hurled at you at 100 mph & actually being able to hit it with a bat that’s 2-3” round to me is mind blowing. The eye/hand coordination is exceptional. Thanks Bees.

The best part of these plays is that if they miss the ball the batter is going to be able to run for a long time... its a huge gamble to dive

10:50. The other outfielder was running behind the guy who caught to ball to back him up in case the ball got behind him.

The guy who made the catch at 9:54, Kevin Kiermaier, is in hot water because a couple days ago when he slid into home plate he bumped into the Blue Jays’ catcher, causing him to drop a strategy card he kept in his back pocket. The catcher didn’t notice his card had dropped and Kiermaier got this “Ooh, what do we have here?” look on his face and took it and didn’t give it back. Today a Blue Jays pitcher intentionally hit Kiermaier while he was at bat to retaliate and a near-brawl ensued.

You should definitely make an effort to watch some of the MLB playoff games when they start in two weeks. One good thing about the MLB playoffs is that they ALWAYS include some afternoon games, even during the workweek, which will make it easier for British viewing. 😊

The *point* of the glove is to help them make catches. It's still insanely difficult in many cases.

Yeah, people who have never tried doing this really cannot fully appreciate how difficult this is. Anybody playing the outfield in the MLB is likely to be a supremely gifted both athletically and in possessing baseball skills. Hitting, catching throwing, running. You have no chance to make it on this level is you have a weakness in any of these areas. ⚾⚾⚾⚾🏋‍🏋‍

8:11 billy hamilton the player who made that catch is one of the fastest players in the MLB he’s probably one of the only players who would be able to even get to the ball

If you don't use a bat you just call a "kickabout" playing catch. If you use a bat, there's a thing called "pepper" that can be pretty fun.

Just friends throwing around with the baseball casually is called "catch"
You'd ask your 'bout we go play some catch?"

To me the hardest part was running with your eyes bobbing around trying to focus on a tiny white ball and tracking it.

At 10:55, the other player isn't running in the wrong direction. He's getting in position to "back up" his teammate--to make a play on the ball if McCutcheon had missed the catch.

The guy who you asked about “what’s he doin?” The commentator says it’s twilight, so he lost the ball in the sun..

Lookin' good with the new stuff, Beesley! I actually think the old stuff looked fine. 5:04 To judge it . . . Running away from it . . . And looking back into the Sun. Luckily it wasn't directly into the Sun or he might have missed it totally.

It's hard to really understand how much these balls are slicing or curving in the air unless you've ever tried to catch really hard hit baseballs. They move laterally a LOT. Makes judging the trajectory that much more difficult.

diving catches, and jumping up the wall catches are crazy-cool, but for me, those line drive balls that head straight back at the pitcher, who coolly nabs it for the out really rock. i mean, there just isn't a helluva lot of reaction time available! Your new setup is aces, btw

Buy a glove on ebay and have a friend toss you some groundballs, and after 9/10 bounce in and out of your glove you’ll appreciate how good all of these guys hands are. Groundballs are harder to field/catch than flyballs, but generally flyballs present more of an opportunity for full speed, fully stretched out diving plays, where they hit the grass and slide. But it’s those groundballs where they get a late, awkward hop that are the most difficult, especially if it’s hit really hard and not right at them.
