VW TDI Diesel Engine Cooling Fan Stays On Running When Car Switched Off (DPF)(VW Golf/Passat/Touran)

I arrived home after a long motorway journey and noticed that the engine fan was still running after I had turned the car off. This continued for quite a few minutes but is perfectly normal behaviour although only happens occasionally.
When the car has been on a long trip the DPF (Diesel Particulate FIlter) will sometimes start to regenerate and burn off the soot that has collected in it. This generates excess heat which can be dissipated when the car is moving but when stationary needs fan assistance to cool it down and prevent damage.

So if your engine fan runs after the car is switched off don't panic, it's normal for a diesel with DPF fitted (most diesel cars after 2007/8 in Europe/UK) and will stop after around 5 mins.

The same thing on my audi q3, we couldn't find any fault. It turns off after 5-6 mins. Thanks man, it's a relief 😄

My golf6 has been doing this for at least 2 years. What you identified is what I learned from others. I'm lucky where I can hit the Hume for an hour to burn it out. A tip is use Liqui Molly in your fuel. It cleans the system and the car runs smoother. Not cheap but this stuff really works well.
My fan rarely comes on now.
Just need to sort why the radio comes on randomly when I open the door and replace hood lining.
I just bought a new cx30 and the wife told me to keep Golfy as she calls it.

My 2009 VW Passat has same problem, the fan keep running after engine shut off. but it will turn off after 2-5 mins

I just fixed mine this weekend. Had to change water pump and thermostat. Then finally change fan resistor and problem was solved.

I recently bought a VW Golf MK7 2.0 TDI and it reaches a normal working temperature of around 90 Celsius in 5 minutes or less no matter the outside temperature. And also, even if you drove it for 5 minutes, when you turn it off, the fan keep working for another 2 3 minutes. Is this normal?

Is it normal that the cooling fans are not
moving at all? Or are they broken and they’re not cooling as they should ? Could there be a resistor broken because they are new so I don’t think they are the Problem.

Ok I'm stumped my fans don't run when hooked up at connection but when I unplug it and run power from battery straight to cooling fans they run. ? What's the problem ?
