Let's talk about: Windows RDP - DPI Scaling (Simple trick to fix!)

I use a lot of Windows RDP sessions for work and privately. But even since getting a nice 4K 27" monitor I've had issues with this since Windows does not apply DPI scaling to your RDP session. I found a quick fix for that which I explain in this video!

Many thanks. 3 years after you made this video, it still works perfectly.

This helped fix my issue after I kept googling about it online. Thanks for posting!

This worked with my laptop as the host and connecting via TeamViewer to trigger the custom scale once, after that RDP worked perfectly. Thank you so much for this!

Another way I found was this..

1) I Changed custom Scaling in my PC to 100 (The idea is to match my current PC Settings)
2) Selected Windows Scaling for Apps to OFF.
3) Signed out and signed in on my PC (To make the Custom scaling take effect)
4) Acces RDP - nothing would have changed yet.
5) Now restarted the Remote machine.
6) RDP again after the server restart.
7) Perfect Resolution! :-)

You my sir are a legend, works perfectly, but I note you have to use the Windows Store RDP app to connect rather than the default one that comes with Windows (Connecting to a 2008 R2 serve anyway).

I find funny that using Remnia in PopOs give me better quality, resizing and scalling out of the box in a better way than using the default RDP client in windows

You can set the resolution you want in the Rdp software, there is a setting and i think the default is to use the resolution of your pc but you can change that.

I have a Win10 VM that runs in Win10 Pro Hyper-V on my host. In the Win10 VM, I RDC into my companies Win10 Enterprise VM via their VPN tunnel. I pretty much have zero issues with scaling on any of it. I'm running an AOC 40" 4k panel as my main, 15 year old Dell panel as secondary, and have my 11 year old Asus N73JQ laptop and a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 both connected via Space Desk. The space desk gets a little screwy at times, usually when maximizing, minimizing, or connecting/disconnecting the space desk screens. But generally speaking everything scales correctly or follows my pre-set scaling in the windows host and space desk. I get it that hyper-v is basically a no-go for many who virtualize, but that's just my experience personally. Oh and I'm not sure if this has any bearing on the performance, but i run my 4k monitor of my RTX 2060 KO and my old Dell monitor off the Intel integrated graphics on my i7-8700.

Using the default remote desktop client, I get a zoom option in the system menu of the window (click on the app icon)

Is there any news on this issue? Is it possible to start a session without this trick?

What camera and microphone do you use? The quality is really nice.

What about using virt-viewer and using spice as the gpu?

I use a virtual HDMI NT dongle on my rdp machine, than i can set every resolution i want.

Better solution is to edit your .rdp file and add this line anywhere:
desktopscalefactor:i:150

That is why I use 40 inch monitor so that I will not need scaling. Also have the full real estate of the screen.

Well my problem is the opposite and i dont use VM, I use win8.1 as the rdp server that i am accessing through a remina client on Linux mint and i need the screen scaled more to see the program i am using as the bottom part is out of view and cant scroll the screen to see it, and the resolution properties says its lower then what it should be cos when i check them on the the server itself its higher, so can u chime in?? or is it a lost cause? Btw the monitor on the client is a HD 1366x768 and on the server its set up to 1400xsomething.

Just need to change the resolution of the rdp before click connect.

That is overly complicated, wtf. You can use Microsoft's Remote Desktop Client and before you hit Connect, you click Show Options -> Display Tab -> set the resolution you desire, then hit connect. In the new Window (if it is full screen, make it windowed), click on the top left icon in the title bar, near the name or ip of your RDC server and check the Smart sizing option. Now you can also resize the window and scale everything to your resolution. Done. I believe some older RDC clients, like in Windows 8.1, do not have the smart sizing option, but they do have the resolution option in display tab.
