For a long time I thought the Rumpelstiltskin we all knew and loved, the humorous and insane Dark One was who Rumpelstiltskin truly wanted to be. That is, until I was introduced to Mr. Gold, and learned more about him. And then I realized that being the Dark One is what drove him to that insanity. And for a while, he managed to subdue that dark demon of himself inside, which was the Rumpel we loved so much, because we didn't know the full story. And after going down a path battling between light and darkness, we finally learn that the very Rumpel we see at the end of this video is the person Gold had tried so hard not to become all over again. Which is why it's all the more heartbreaking than delighting to see him turn back into the Rumpel we thought we knew and loved, because we always thought this persona was a choice. But it is just as much a curse. The serious and goodhearted Rumpel we saw throughout the series is the Rumpel we grew to love in favor of the Dark One, and seeing this Rumpel turn back into the insane crocodile we thought was gone is sad, because after how far he's come, his darkness has taken over once more, and driven him to insanity, with only the desire to "Spin...spin...spin..." without any true goal or motive. This is why the Rumpelstiltskin we see from the wish realm contrasts so much with the one we're familiar with. Gold has come so far to get rid of that demon, just as Regina wanted to rid herself of the Evil Queen, and just as Zelena wanted to forget about the Wicked Witch. He has found the light, or at least a trace of it, and wants to do good. He has a family, has watched two children come and go, and has a wife who he loves dearly, although deceased. Whereas the villain at the end of the final season is alone. Bae left him, his only chance at true love is dead, and he is isolated with no one but the darkness, his dagger, and his darkened heart. He has given up all hope of finding redemption and happiness, and only desires power and darkness over love and light. And as much as it hurts me to say this, what makes it so heartbreaking to see our Rumpel temporarily become the Dark One again is that had he not have found Belle or been sent to Storybrooke via the dark curse to find Bae, this is the Rumpel that he would have become. He always had a trace of goodness in him, even as the dark one, which is why fans loved him so much. Why we rooted for him. But if he would have lost Belle early on and never been reunited with his son, Bae, then he woud have become pure evil. Never having a way back. Which is why even when wish Rumpel sets eyes on our Rumpel's family and hears of Rumpel's desire to be reunited with Belle, wish realm Rumpel is not moved at all. He has given up hope on love, and his only motive now is influenced by selfish desires. And I think I speak for everyone when I say that we're glad out Rumpel did not become this dark beast. We love all the three stages of Rumpel. The coward, the insane Dark One, and Gold. But had he stayed the Dark One for too long, he would have truly been a villain with no way of finding the light. And even a small reminder of how far he's come from that insanity, and how all of that trial and redemption would have been in vain had it not been for the last curse, which is what we see in this video, is enough to make one cry.

I think that Weaver's plot in this episode was a test. A test to see if he would do the right thing(allow Roni to help him get his dagger back), or the wrong thing(steal the magic and try to get it back on his own). The episode shows he failed that test and did the wrong thing, though, in his position, I'd have done the exact same thing.

I mean, if the dagger(the Dark One's lifeline, puppet strings, and source of power)was missing and you had no idea where it was, wouldn't you do what Weaver did?

that moment when you realize, rumple remained the village coward for a reason, he lost milah to hook and killed her for a reason, he lost nealfire twice for a reason, he was always gonna be the dark one for a reason, he killed both of his parents for a reason, he was never close with henry or lucy for a reason, belle was meant to die for a reason, rumple was meant to die for nook for a reason, bc the prophecy was never about henry, it was about... gideon gold. he was the boy who was rumple's undoing, his birth made rumple want to change for his second chance with beautydreamer bc that same boy, his second son ended up been somebody more than he was expected to be, (an apprentice for the black fairy, who was rumples mother, and neal/gideon's evil paternal grandmother, henry's great-grandma, and lucy's great-great-grandma) ~gideon was the boy would reunite his father with his first born son, (his older halfbrother, nealfire in the afterlife) bc it was gideon all along, who was the son that was to be fatherless. afterall, dark1rumple didn't let the seer finish his prophecy OMG! either that, or adam&eddy were too lazy to write in gideon in the series finale to have rumple's body buried next to belle, as well for nealfire's grave to be moved to the edge of realms. so as a better ending, everybody visits gideon and then fades away, meaning they died, even henry and his uncle neal. mayb neal/gideon and roland were best pals. srsly, my only disappointment with the series finale was, gideon and roland were missing at regina's coronation. i mean prince neal was there, hell wouldv liked after the flashforward another one happened with madarcher's wedding, and thats how we saw an adult roland giving robin away to alice, then gideon is one of the groomsmen with neal/roland bc his dad rumple saved alice's dads life, for a reason. rumple's sacrifice showed henry acting the way nealfire did when rumple died the first time. SRSLY OMG! like father, like son, like both grandsons, like greatgrandson, like great-great granddaughter, oh man. i think neal wouldv made an overly protective grandpa, lol "Stiltskinfamily FTW"!!!

I mentioned on another scene in this epesode that if I was the dark one I would just look for a way to destroy the dagger and for most of my time make costumes since I won't be sleeping anymore.
