Rumple was right to steal the Magic, yes Henry needs it, but the Dagger is a far greater priority.

The Dagger can control the Dark One, but it can also kill him. If either Facilier or Gothel took the Dark One Power it wouldn't only be bad for Rumple, but for everyone else as well.

After the horrible stuff that Zelena did while controlling Rumple, and what Emma and Hook did as Dark Ones, it should be obvious just how important it is for the Dagger to remain in Rumple's position.

Also, the Dark One Power must remain Rumple's. Rumple is the only Dark One who would agree to give up his Power to the Guardian. For that Guardian to purify the Darkness.

If there were a new Dark One the cycle odf endless dangerous Dark One would restart.

Yes, eventually the Power of the Dark One was destroyed, but as usual Rumple found a loophole, and managed to purify the Darkness himself before passing his heart (and maybe his Power) to Rogers.
