You're different from the other youtubers who were just saying "go for it and do your essays", thanks for brining the Lance Armstrong case here, very relevant!

I'd probably generate an essay and then rewrite each sentence to sound more personable. Ex: "The industrial revolution had a big impact on the stock market, the people, and especially the economy." Then I'd change it too, "The Industiral revolution had a big impact on the stock market, the economy, and of course great grampas bank account."

I tried to get it to write a paper with references. No, I’m not cheating (my college days are long behind me). I just wanted to see what it can do. Well, no one has to worry too much about cheating; it gave me bogus references. College students beware!

The effectiveness of using a rewriting tool highly depends on how it is utilized. While it can be a useful tool in assisting people, I believe that simply copying and pasting an entire essay and letting the software do the work for you is not conducive to learning. However, if you utilize the tool to improve the grammar of essays you have written, it can be an excellent way to learn from your mistakes and hone your skills. Therefore, I encourage you to use the tool wisely and take advantage of the learning opportunities it provides.

This is insane! I would say this is good to get a quick idea of your research topic. But after that then dive deep into research.
For example, if I have a college essay based on something I am not interested in, gender studies (for example), I could type it into this app and get a general idea on the history and fact checks on it, and then from there begin research without using it further than that.

Really good point about degree revocations. I wonder how long it will take for universities (or schools in general) to develop a way to detect AI-generated responses. Probably a while is my guess.

Why is there a lot of unavailable pages when trying to reference it? I don’t have a problem of maybe leaving 1 or 2 of those on a big a paper with multiple references unless the professor checks the reference. Which seemingly based on my previous papers they don’t, however as long it’s not from a wiki source

Thanks for bringing the video to us! As a college English instructor, this thing is causing us to question how we can detect it. I fear that this might be the end of college classes, and it is the end of people thinking for themselves.

thanks for a great video. I am wondering if i put my very rough draft of 50, 000 word document into chatgpt, will it come out better?

Question!

Let's say a teacher assigned an essay on the industrial revolution. They give you a long and detailed prompt on what to write about in the essay.

What if multiple students were to essentially copy and paste that prompt into chatgpt? Would chatgpt give them all the same exact essay? I wonder if it would be word for word, or maybe just a little bit different (but still hard to tell apart, from a professor's perspective).

Citations are missing. Without citations that can be verified, the evidence offered by any writer - human or AI - would be sus. You have to know as much or more than the AI to be able to verify that what it is writing is accurate. A better starting point is with paraphrased notes and their sources. Introduce organization, and then begin prompting AI to shape the product. Seeing this unfold in a video created by a content expert in a domain who is familiar with the sources and can verify what AI produces would be amazing. The longer the paper, the more challenging it is to use AI to write or edit in its entirety. Not dissing. AI is a useful tool and provides helpful input.

AI is great for essays, but it does not CITE in text.

I realize that this may become the new normal, yet that's no justification for turning in papers you didn't write. I am a college instructor, and I know the writing is on the wall. Yet, I side with Musk, Gates and others and their concern with the potential impact on everything as a result of AI. My single greatest concern is that by allowing machines to do all of our thinking, we will set ourselves on a path for the total devolution of humankind. If you think the dumbing down of America over the last fifty years was bad, then watch the movie Idiocracy for one idea as to where this may lead us. The big thing that film missed was how humankind's fall from its current role, overlording of Earth, is more likely what will lead to the world The Matrix predicts. Yet, the prime cause of our downfall is more like that proposed in The Terminator. Sadly, until we learn the most important philosophical point proffered by Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park, “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” So, let's shut down AI for our own sake, and let's build an army of ethicists who can guide us away from doom by thinking before doing. We must slow down and think before deciding to do.

How is this not helping students cheat?!

Cheating is bad for your development. You do not get better or challenge yourself to think harder and harder. You are handicapping yourself if you use this to cheat.
