Using topical minoxidil, but not seeing any hair regrowth? Don't give up on this hair loss drug, yet. Your problem might be due to an enzyme called sulfotransferase.
Topical minoxidil is delivered as a "pro-drug", meaning when you apply it to the scalp, it isn't technically active. Rather, minoxidil has to come into contact with an enzyme called sulfotransferase, which sulfates minoxidil so that it can begin to have an effect on our hair follicles.
Unfortunately, a huge percentage of men and women lack enough sulfotransferase activity in their scalps for minoxidil to regrow hair. This is why response rates (and regrowth rates) for minoxidil are highly variable.
The good news: there are at least two ways to enhance sulfotransferase activity in the skin, and thereby make minoxidil more effective:
First, try microneedling. Evidence shows that microneedling can enhance skin levels of sulfotransferase several-fold (depending on the person), and increase the response rates and regrowth rates of minoxidil by up to 400%.
Second, try adding in retinoic acid. This vitamin A derivative can enhance sulfotransferase activity, too. Moreover, studies show that retinoic acid plus minoxidil may regrow more hair than minoxidil alone.
