Parental stress has become a public health concern in the United States, according to US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, who issued an advisory that calls for a culture shift in support of parents and caregivers. CNN's health reporter Jacqueline Howard has more.

There's a reason the birth rate is declining. It's because people can't afford to have kids without both parents working. And America does not support families like a country like France does. And calling parental stress a Public Health concern is right on.

It takes a village to raise a child. Parents need a good support system! I have been blessed with such. Not everyone is, unfortunately. 🥺

Many European countries have 2 years paid leave. Some can give the man one year and the woman one year or one takes both years. Your lucky to get 6 weeks in the US.

My mom gave me great parenting advice. Create structure, routine, and consistent discipline before age two.

Wow... took a surgeon general report for this???? Of course parental stress is a major public health issue. A single person with full time employment can barely sustain themselves, and that's WITHOUT dependents. Yeah it's a major issue, but the issue is a symptom of a larger problem

The high price just to live and support a family is stressful.

Having children is not compulsory, it is a choice. The endless promotion of child = good while demonizing those choosing otherwise does not reflect our modern reality. Inflation is hard on everyone, so is having 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 children.

This is especially in America - on top of childcare, everything needs to be done within office hours. In some countries, clinics and dentists are open evenings and Saturdays so that lessens scheduling conflicts and having to take time off. There's much less paperwork to deal with and no need to deal with insurance etc etc. Even with things like medical and dental checkups for entering first grade, my parents never had to deal with it because in my home country they bring the dentists, medical checkups and vaccinations onsite to the school. There's just so much to deal with here. Even during maternity leave you have to coordinate the paperwork and figure out coverage and timing between the company and FMLA (assuming your work Even pays for maternity leave).

I don't care how stressed out I get as a parent having my daughter is a blessing and worth all the stress.

It takes a village and I feel like millennials have been abandoned in our parenting years. Obviously not everyone will relate to this and I love that for you. But the general consensus is that our boomer parents aren’t involved with our kids nearly as much as their parents were involved with us when we were kids in the 80s/90s.
Add to that the rising cost of childcare, housing and the fact that a two income household isn’t enough to stay afloat for most nowadays.

Something has to give.

Yes it is stressful and when you have special needs children it’s on a whole other level I feel.

This is why we need a parent at home to manage the kids and the home.
