Something occurred to me after watching this scene again. Right after that small piece of the symbiote touched Eddie’s jacket, the rest of it basically gives up on Peter and goes straight for Eddie. Like it had a taste of someone with sweet murderous hate and and preferred it over the stale bland guilt. Love little touches like this!

Tobey’s Spiderman was such a beast that he had villains praying for his death 💀

The fact that Eddie really took the advice of him seriously and went to church is hilarious

Peter trying to get rid of venom is EXACTLY how addiction feels.

It took me thirteen years to realize the duality at play in this scene:

When Peter is at his lowest point, he recognizes what he's done and takes steps to make things right.
When Eddie is at his lowest point, he refuses to accept what he's done and wants to hurt other people.

Peter goes to a church to take the first steps to redemption and ultimately gets it.
Eddie goes to a church seeking revenge and is ultimately destroyed.

The symbiote corrupted Peter, but because he is, at his core, a good person, he managed to break free.
Because Eddie is, at his core, is a selfish, cruel person, the symbiote utterly corrupted him and led to his death.

Spider-Man 3 is a lot smarter than many people think.

Eddie: I’m sitting here humbled and humiliated.

Jesus: Gonna cry?

A couple key symbolic things I noticed, cause this scene is absolutely stuffed with details:
-Eddie actually goes to church after Peter tells him "You want forgiveness? Get religion", but its for the opposite of forgiveness
-The shot of Eddie entering the church is filmed with his reflection upside down in the holy water, signifying his life turning upside down
-Eddie quite literally hears a bell when he asks for Peter's death, which brings him to where he gets the power to do so
-Peter is up on high, getting rid of the evil (venom), while Eddie is down low asking for a bad deed and gets consumed by the evil
-The church being a place people go to repent is fittingly the setting for Peter's repentance, but its the opposite for Eddie because he is full of hatred and desire to sin

The fact that spiderman is strong as hell yet struggling to rip the symbiot from his body just make this scene 10x better.

Eddie asked God to kill Peter. God responds by killing the evil in Peter and that evil fell to Eddie as punishment. This is probably one of my favorite scenes in a movie.

I just realized Peter has super strength, imagine a regular human trying to rip off the venom suit

I was listening to an audio book on the novelization of this movie. And in this particular scene, I read that everytime Peter was losing the will to rip the suit off his body, he replayed the image of him hitting Mary Jane in his head to force himself to keep going until the suit was off him completely.

Spider-Man's willpower has got to be the strongest in fiction period.

Peter taking off the symbiote is exactly how it feels to take off a wet shirt

Everyone's talking about Eddie's prayer. All I can think about is how Peter had to web swing back to his apartment, naked in the rain without anyone seeing him.

I love how Raimi uses the black suit to tackle adult themes like addiction in a way that kids or young adults could understand. Most notably stuff like lust, substance abuse, greed, pride, anger, etc. And have an arc dedicated to overcoming it and how it’s not easy.

Just like with all unhealthy addictions it starts off feeling good and you think you have control of it but then eventually you lose yourself without realizing it and it affects every area of your life including the people you care about and you become an an entirely different person. Once you acknowledge you have a problem and need to change it’s not easy to break. I don’t think Raimi got enough credit for it back in the day but I’m glad a lot of people are realizing it now.

For a director who don't want Venom initially, he sure blend the theme of forgiveness and hate well along with Sandman

The shot and music at 0:30 when he is sitting like this, in black costume and then not just jumping, but falling... oh... just iconic... a masterpiece

Even though Spiderman 3 wasn't originally supposed to have Venom, I'm still shocked at how good the symbiote looks in this film. 14 years later and this still looks absolutely gorgeous.

No matter what, this version of him getting the Symbiote off of him is the best.

The way how the suit keeps trying to reconnect itself whenever he tries ripping it off is so satisfying to watch. As much as I love Insomniac's version of the black suit, Sam Raimi really nailed the Symbiote removal scene.

This is one of my favourite scenes ever. Even the CGI! Just the ruthlessness of him ripping it off but the Symbiote’s desperation to stay on him so it tries recovering was so fascinating!

All fan rage and issues aside, EVERYTHING about this scene

-The music
-The cinematography
-The pacing
-Visuals
-sound design
-Tobey Maguire’s physical acting
- Topher Grace’s desperation

All of it is amazing.

I truly feel like Spider-Man 3 is a movie made of individual scenes, rather than a movie made of a solid/functional narrative
