RIGA Latvia | First Impressions

Our first day in Riga and we were most impressed with this interesting and varied city. We spend the day getting to know the old, medieval town and the city centre, visiting the major sights and getting a good feel for this laid back, understated place (The Art Nouveau district is definitely NOT understated but that is for the following video!)

Come with us on a walking tour around Riga and check out this amazing place to visit.

Some of the famous sights of Riga we visit are :- Riga Castle, Daugava River, The House of The Blackheads, The Powder Tower, The Cat House.

And as we often do, we finish the day by sampling a few of the excellent Latvian beers!

This is very unexpected for me. I didn't realize that Riga was so picturesque. The buildings look like they've come out of a storybook. A sincere thank you for sharing with us!

Riga was a city of Hanseatic League in Middle Ages, so was also free city of Bremen (Germany)The bronze statue of a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster called the "Town Musicians of Bremen" is a popular German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm and is one of the symbols of Bremen. Riga as the sister city of Bremen got the bronze
statue as a gift from Bremen in 1990. The statue has actually a political subtext. More info you can google if interested.

Thank You! Nice video. I'm from Riga. If you make video about Riga, Latvia or Latvians, native Latvians will sooner or later watch it. ;) :D What about the beverages. Lāčplēsis means an Beerslayer. It's an ancient Latvian hero, who fought crusader invaders. We have The Heroic Epic "Lāčplēsis" written in the end of 19th century by Latvian officer in Czarist Russia army Andrejs Pumpurs. Gaišas means light. So first one is plain light beer. Second "dzintara" (meaning amber) is of more distinguished sort of beer. I like it actually, very much. And the third comes from ancient Latvian town of Cēsis in a Gauja ancient riverbank valley. This sort of beer is called Cēsis brook unfiltered.

the Brotherhood of Blackheads, a guild for unmarried merchants, shipowners, and foreigners in Riga. Also, bronze is naturally antibacterial, so you're safe rubbing the statue

You have very nice narrating style, very pleasant easy to understand style. You made these sad third world places quite less scary and even likable.

Thank you for great feedback. But please dont drink lāčplēsis beer anymore. We have so much better beer. But anyway most art novoue is not in old town.
