My parents and I were the only ones from a large family who survived the war because we were already in America and I neveer went back...too afraid of endless days crying of what might have been. My grandparents had a house in Riga and a Datcha in Meluzhi...

Latvians are well-skilled with smoked meats, from all of the different sausages to fish. That smoked mackerel is sublime enjoyed cold, with just fresh lemon squeezed on it. In the new city center there used to be a shop that only sold smoked meats and they had smoked wild boar jerky, that tasted like lean bacon with a sweet molasses glaze on it. Unfortunately, you can't take it or any meat on a flight to the USA. :(
