Leader of Hamas Yahya Sinwar has been killed in a surprise encounter with Israeli forces. The mastermind behind the October 7 attacks, Sinwar has been Israel’s top target in Gaza for some time. Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said ‘our enemies cannot hide. We will pursue and eliminate them.’ What does the death of Sinwar mean for the wider conflict? Will this mark a winding down of operations in Gaza, with Israel turning its focus to the North? Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to ‘destroy’ Hamas when war began, with many arguing this was an impossible task. Is the death of Sinwar the beginning of the end? Assistant online editor Angus Colwell is joined by Tom Gross, Middle East expert and commentator.

I'm surprised the British government hasn't offered them asylum in the UK.

7:43 Mr. Colwell, it is not a war against Lebanon. As your guest’s reply makes clear, Israel is fighting Hezbollah, which is located in Lebanon. There are many Lebanese who regard them as intruders or Iranian-directed occupiers. In future discussions, please make the distinction that Israel’s actions in southern Lebanon are against a designated terrorist group, but not the state of Lebanon.

Nice to see that The Spectator is still 'alive'.I was a regular reader of your magazine, in my opinion had a very respectable news reporting and analysis, in Trivandrum Public Library from 1979-84 when I was studying there.Best wishes. Your analysis here seems to be on par with those good old days .

Im willing to bet Hamas will still decline all ceasefire offers, because they require Hamas to give up power, which they'll never agree to. So this wont mean much in the grand scheme of things
