Are you team hub or no hub? 🤨 Hopefully this video sparks some automation ideas, no matter what you use in your smart home!

I am team hub - in fact I have Three - legacy smart things, Hubitat as my main, and augmented with Home Assistant. My favorite automation is one where Amazon delivers our packages INSIDE our garage with MyQ ... it notifies us, locks the access door from the garage to the house if it is open (it is locked if we are gone), unlocks it 10 min after all garage doors are closed AND no presence inside the garage, and records 10min of video from 2 cameras inside the garage while they are delivering.

Thank you for the video. I know that going through Google or Alexa has some drawbacks because we are at its mercy when the Internet fails but that’s all I have so anyway showing me this without the hubs is very helpful. Thank you very much.👍

Thank you for the information on some of the new sensors. I have used Google Home for years with no hubs. The workaround for Google previously was to buy a smart plug from the same company that your contact sensors comes from use the plugs trigger to trigger your routine through google home.

Thank you for pointing out everything that Google Home can do. As someone new to automations and being a little broke, i just connect everything to Google Home. That way, my non-techy spouse can also use everything. It's simple, it's easy, and it works (the automation part, not the speaking to Home devices part).

This is an easy way to simplify life so THANK YOU for sharing what can be done with Google Home.

I hope you can make a video of yourself physically showing us the automations and how to set them up because, at this time, the only thing i know how to do is 'If it's 11 p.m., dim these lights' or 'If it's 7 a.m., turn these lights off'. I wouldn't know how to set up some of the more complicated stuff but i want to learn!

12:39 Inovelli is introducing a "White" Matter switch that could probably be paired with Google Home.

Got a tip for your switch issue at 12:40 – instead of trying to find a pair of smart switches and bulbs that work together, you can simply wire the bulbs so they're always on and then use automations with the switches to control the bulbs. Just run power in to the switch, but not out. Works like a charm for me, and works with any ecosystem!

Fun idea/question: for the automation that checks if the baby is asleep before blasting the alert, have you tried using your ESPresence sensor to only play the notification in the room you are in instead?

Gread vid and great content - How are you managing the chromecast to not turn the light off and then on again each time a hover over trailer starts on netflix or similar?

I have a couple of LED night lights by my kitchen sink, plugged into a 3 in 1 outlet strip - I have looked for something simple that would sense the nightfall, turn these on, then off again in the am - the sensor would need to be somewhere not close to these lights, as in a windowsill. I have Apple computers, and an iphone.

I like the hubs just for the additional options they open up but I completely understand why someone who doesn’t want to do all the nitty gritty would skip it in favor of a simpler set up

I've been into smart home devices for last 4-5 yrs. I was inspired to buy a hub seeing one of you video how lightening fast and responsive the home automation becomes just with the help of a hub. Ever since I got myself a hub I cannot stress enough for a hub in any smart home automations. The wifi automations are highly unreliable if you do not have a stable internet connection and I hate why so many companies produce cheap wifi garbage that requires a constant internet as a must to properly function in home automations. I used to get various failed or delayed automations on my wifi bulbs and door sensors where it would take 5-7 seconds lowest to trigger an automation or sometimes not respond at all! but with the help on a hub its almost as fast as snap of a finger. Never ever going back to wifi hubless automations.

You don't need a hub, you just need knowledge, greetings from Uruguay
