Get to know how a healthy marine ecosystem functions, and what creates the lethal conditions that lead to dead zones.

--

For most of the year, the Gulf of Mexico is teeming with marine life, from tiny crustaceans to massive whales. But every summer, disaster strikes. Around May, animals begin to flee the area. And soon, creatures that can’t swim or can’t swim fast enough begin to suffocate and die off in massive numbers. What's going on? Kate Slabosky dives into the lethal conditions that create dead zones.

Lesson by Kate Slabosky, directed by Mette Ilene Holmriis.

The great thing about Ted-Ed: not only do they share knowledge with us, but they also spread awareness for significant problems.

5:42 In Japan a man did this in the 70's to 90's to promote a healthy relation with the industries upriver and downriver which impacted fishermen and those with oyster farms. At first he struggled due to the science of his research were still new and untested. After many years his study and research helped his oyster farm, and the business up river. It made the ecosystem in land healthy to those to the sea as well, and everywhere in between.
Decaying leaves and run off from the river gave ample amounts of nutriets not only supplying food for plankton but the oysters. It affected the quality and the flavor of the oysters.

I don't know how Ted-Ed does it, but they have literally answered every question that popped up in my over inquisitive mind. Kudos, Ted-Ed😉

The real question is:
Can Ted-Ed run out of educational videos and ideas?

As someone who lives near rivers in North Carolina it's great to see this real problem getting some coverage I don't see the media mention it often.

@TED-Ed you people are the most educative people I have ever known. I mean you people think about everything. Your channel is enough to teach us than any other teacher. KEEP IT

Thank you for teaching us even during COVID-19. Ive learnt more from your channel within minutes than hour sessions at school. And thanks for still posting during COVID, it’s probably harder now.

Today's Fact:

About 50-80% of the oxygen we breath is actually produced from ocean plants, not trees.
