Will the ocean ever run out of fish? - Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Jennifer Jacquet

When most people think of fishing, we imagine relaxing in a boat and patiently reeling in the day’s catch. But modern industrial fishing -- the kind that stocks our grocery shelves -- looks more like warfare. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Jennifer Jacquet explain overfishing and its effects on ecosystems, food security, jobs, economies, and coastal cultures.

Lesson by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Jennifer Jacquet, directed by Anton Bogaty.

If this keeps up, the phrase "There's a lot of fish in the sea" is gonna have the opposite meaning.

The sad part about this is that we will never learn until something is already gone.

I'm a trained sushi chef of over 20 years, and this is why in my restaurant, I have expanded a vegan sushi menu, and hope to one day soon open an entirely vegan sushi bar. But first, I must introduce the idea to my community. So far, so good! Thank you, TedEd crew for all of your educational videos!

Just showed this to my class. Education is KEY to change people's behaviour.

Also worth mentioning, roughly half of all food caught, raised and farmed for the American market ends up in landfills. The US has a fraction of the worlds population, yet "consumes" and throws away enough food to feed much of the rest of the world. Recreational fishing regulations in America also causes as much harm as it does good. Rather than accepting whatever size is caught, regulations result in many fish having to be thrown back to die and more caught to fit regulations and limits.

This is really eye opening. We as humans should always be aware of other fellow species on Earth and all of their needs. This is important. They need help. We really are all in this together💕💕

I fly fish for Atlantic Salmon in Eastern Canada (Gaspe, Quebec region) and I cannot agree more. The Atlantic Salmon population has been devastated by overfishing in the open ocean off Greenland and Iceland. As the video said commercial fishing doesn't respect boarders. So when Salmon come back to spawn there are less and less annually. Coastal communities, Native Americans, and most of all the Salmon population have been hurt severely.

The reason I watch this video is because I watched a documentary of Netflix about the same issue. The documentary called Seaspiracy . The current consequence of commercial fishing is terrifyingly devastating. I highly recommend that documentary for anyone who want to know about what the ocean has been suffering and anyone loving this plannet.

WWF and Greenpeace have published guides for consumers to know which fish is still "okay to eat". I would really recommend them (there are apps too) because we as customers determine the demand on certain fish species. And the demand determines the supply!

Honestly I love this channel. The video ended with ''We need to stop overfishing'', and TED-Ed very rarely ends a video with such a blunt and direct statement, so this one time when they do it, it makes it sound much more urgent and important. I wonder if they did it on porpuse.

It's funny how us Humans haven't fully discovered the ocean
Or even gone deep sea
But we're still killing them down there

I'm now in my undergrad study of marine science and seeing the knowledges I learn in my classes now are dying is very upsetting. 😢 Please human, change. for a better ocean. So my friends and I can learn and protect them in the future.
