If you listen closely to the music in the background the song M.E by Gary Numan is playing. It was made in 1979 and the song itself is about a robot that has outlived all humans and life on Earth and the lyrics are the robot lamenting about being immortal and lonely. To me, this was a subtle parallel to Diana’s state of being at this party, being a lonely immortal herself.

Yes, this moment is controversial for reasons everyone knows, but to me this is one of the best in the movie. Hans Zimmer's score is ultimately what sold it.

While Chris Pine and Gal Gadot delivered great chemistry, imagine (for a moment) the wish Diana made had reincarnated Steve Trevor's memories rather than his soul. After the wish is made, we see the mystery man (played by Kristoffer Polaha) experience flashes of memories and personality shifts, gradually becoming Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) throughout the movie. This internal struggle could culminate in Steve fully taking over his body at around the middle of the movie until Diana undoes her wish at which point the mystery man would regain consciousness but retain a deep affection for Diana – an affection born from the memories he briefly shared and his experience with Diana in the movie. You could then end with Diana and the mystery man, now revealed to be named Tom Tresser (a US secret agent who was a Wonder Woman love interest and who had his first appearances in comics during the 80s) going on a coffee date together with Diana asking Tom to tell her more about himself.

Even though I didn't care for the movie, I did really like that Steve came back and was reunited with Diana even though it was because of her wish.
