To me, he saved her soul in this scene. Ares was about to drag her down to his level (or dark side) by making her take a life for anger and hatred. Steve pulled her back.

I always wish they didn’t make a sequel to this movie. It was perfect just the way it was.

The second movie truly lacks is about a bigger theme like first one. The first movie is about humanity. It's about humanity has both sides. Human can be ugly and cruel, but we have to believe human are still capable of love and care. Steve Trevor in this scene, represents the best of human. He sacrificed himself because he believes in humanity. Without Steve Trevor, Diana might never see human beings are worth saving. And Ares would win. But thanks to Steve Trevor, Diana understands some of the best quality of humanity, are worthy to protect forever.
The second one is talking about Truth, but in reality, things are very complicated. Quoting from Dark Knight "Sometimes Truth is not good enough, sometimes people deserve more, sometimes people deserve their faith rewarded." If They really want to talk about truth, more doing, less talking will be much better.

Ww84 messed me up for any other romances, man. Steve and Diana’s goodbyes just hurt. At least the second goodbye had more closure, because with this one, she didn’t really know what was going to happen. I love this because it’s like how Uncle Ben was Peter’s motivation to be the best hero, or Thomas and Martha being Bruce’s, well, Steve was Diana’s.

Ares gets stronger with war. The poison gas was his last shot at continuing the war. When Steve destroyed it, Ares got weaker. That’s how he lost to Diana despite beating Darkside.
