Sometimes, we have to make a difficult decision when games get too hard to play. The developers definitely don’t make that decision any easier by trolling us for playing on “easy mode”. In this video we’ll be looking at games that enjoy torturing and taunting players who choose the easy way out. Sonic the Hedgehog actually made fun of its own players by rearranging levels and taking rings out of the game completely. Superman 64 takes the fun away from the player, quite literally by basically playing the game for you in “easy mode”. Valkyrie Profile did what no other game thought of doing and exchanged the “easy mode” for the “hard” one, confounding players all across the United States for a short time.

Devil May Cry has been one of our all-time favorite games, but we were definitely not fans of playing on easy mode because you could never escape it. Castlevania 64 only allowed you to play the first level in “easy mode”. After that, you had to make the tough decision to see if you were brave enough to handle the rest of the game. Streets of Rage 3 taught us there’s nothing quite as demeaning as a good taunt from Robot X. Twisted Metal 2 was a combat car game like we’ve never seen before, but if you wanted to play this game on “easy mode,” it wasn’t going to happen without being called a loser first. We hope you’ll join us as we take a look at 10 video games that troll you for playing on easy!

South Park: The Fractured But Whole only has one difficulty. The skin color option even says "It doesn't change the difficulty of the game, just every other aspect of your life."

Wasn't flying through the rings one of the main reasons superman 64 was hated?

I remember Devil May Cry had a hidden Easy setting, being that if you died a set amount of times, even on the automatic mode, you would permanently unlock Easy..
But it had some harder modes as well. The most infamous one might be "Dante Must Die" which was ridiculously hard. But the reward for completing the game on that mode was totally worth it

I don't think that Spider-Man game should count because I think it was legitimately meant for young kids that don't actually understand how to play. Make them think they're doing well when they're just pressing random buttons unable to understand what they're doing, likely brought to that mode by their parents as they'd otherwise just keep moving around the selector on the menu not being able to figure out how to start it, then when they see they're beating the game, they get the sense of accomplishment that draws in gamers even now, keeping them playing even as they get older and able to actually play. It's actually a smart move and similar to what a lot of parents and older siblings did, handing the kid an unplugged controller or player 2 controller in a singleplayer game and letting them think they're alternating the play or controlling what's actually the CPU. I've seen my older brother do that with his kids and it happens all the time on TV

Resident Evil 4 had a hidden Difficulty tuner feature where if you kept on failing then enemies will become weaker. But if you do better the enemies become stronger.

If I made a troll easy mode, I'd give the player godmode, and make everything one-shot.

enjoy the waste of time

That kid-mode in Spiderman is an excellent idea tbh.
Gives them enough control to keep them occupied but eliminates that constant "I can do this bit, get past it for me" that you get from very young children.

You should have mentioned Earthworm Jim. Particularly the version on Sega CD being the best one for the ending if finishing the game on easy: "What a worm! Playing on practice, eh!? Well you'd better step up the difficulty setting if you want to see the real ending! In the meantime, though..." (Begins reading biological facts about worms along with some ridiculous commentary). You don't get to see the intended ending and you will have to play the entire game over on normal or higher to see the animation with the princess and a cow. I won't give more details to avoid spoilers for anyone who hasn't played through EWJ yet. FWIW, listening through the easy ending is still very entertaining for some reason.

I grew up in the 90's and I never played any twisted metal games. So much for "it just didn't happen". I'm sure there are others that also never played it growing up.

The Easy Mode being hardest setting reminds me of the game I worked on in College from a class project. We tried to make the AI easier by making it slower to respond to players actions but the result was the AI actually became harder because it didn't fall for quick hit and run harassment tactics and instead pushed through on it's assault.

Not quite trolling the players, but just gone through Exile's Reach, the new starter zone for WoW. The tears of rage from other players fighting the end boss when they actually had to use good tactics to get through was priceless.

As for easy modes, not so much easy but those retro consoles with built-in games should have hard, medium and 'been thirty years since I played this, help me out a bit here' mode.

FNAF World. "Congratulations! You beat the game on the easiest possible difficulty!" Is that what it says after the robot owl thing? I can't remember for sure. It's something like that. But in hard mode you get to fight Scott Cawthon

In Batman: Arkham Origins while playing it, I noticed that on easy, all the minion enemies are actually easier and stuff, but the bosses are actually a lot harder than on normal and even hard too.

The earlier installments of the Guitar Hero series wouldn't let you play the final venue on easy mode, nor would it allow you play the 5th unlockable songs in each venue. There's not much to be said about that to put on this list. But some of my favorite songs were those unlockables.

Ironically though, the easier difficulties have become more difficult for me, not because of the games trolling me, but because I've come to rely on the music itself for the rhythm, easier difficulties lack said rhythm. They don't get my adrenaline pumping.
