Adam: "You have to admire his.... I don't even know what the word is."

I think the word you're looking for might be "audacity" 😂

When Adam said that the Washijo was going to put Hinata in the hardest scenarios to try and break him; I could not think of a more difficult scenario than being a ball boy and not able to play the sport I love when its right in front of my face

I think there's something to say towards the fact that Ukai doesn't really know how to train Hinata, as shown in S2 when he had to go ask for help from his grandfather. Hinata needs special training plan for him to catch up to the team since his middle school was basically nothing structured; Ukai doesn't have the time to do that for him; he has a whole team to look after.

I think that Hinata is a very unique character because he is selfish in a way we don't usually see protrayed in media. Normaly a selfish character has other personality flaws asociated with it, like being mean or putting others down, but Hinata is the contrary: he is always cheering for others, he in not intimidated by someone elses talent, he is kind and friendly, but he also believes that he deserves every oportunity just because he wants it really bad. And It's not a black and white situatrion, because Hinata has been the underdog who doesn't get oportunities, is continiously overlooked and underapreciated and it was not his fault that he "wasted three years in middle school" and is behind his peers in terms of proper technique. But the fact is that, wether he wanted it or not, he wasted those years and is behind. Ant it's so unfair and I understand how a 15 year old boy would be so frustrated that he would try to sneak in a training camp he's not invited to but it's selfish non the less. I think its very good writting and that makes Hinata a very compelling and realistic character. And I also think that his reaction might have been tied to who did get those oportunities, because like Adam said he's not gonna be happy for Kageyama, because their relationshipis based in competition. But also Hinata's relationship with Tsukki isn't great either, and Tsukki is very mean to him so no wonder he didn't feel happy for him. Maybe it would have been different if someone whith whom Hinata had a better relationship had gotten that oportunity, like Yamaguchi or Tanaka.

As for Nishinoya not getting an invite to the youth camp, it is also very possible that the selection committee ruled him out after seeing a suspension on his disciplinary record (Season 1). Of course, us viewers knowing the full context understand that Nishinoya didn't do anything malicious and that that he is an overall good guy but the committee would probably see the suspension and rule him out immediately.

Honestly this episode used to be the most awkward ep when I first time watching Hailkyuu, now it's one of the proudest moments after many many times of rewatching.

a bit of a bad translation in the anime when they introduced sakusa the subtitles says "he's the only 2nd year here" that's not the case there are plenty of 2nd years at the camp but it's saying that he's the only top 3 ace that's not a third year the other two top 5 aces we've met so far bokuto and ushijima are both 3rd years of course

I've watched Haikyuu countless times but I just noticed something: the Crypt Keeper loves height and power, and the Olympic coach said that 'the Japan National Team no longer crumbles before height and power'. It's super interesting to see that contrast at such different levels of play and it makes for a great dynamic. I wish all the coaches could come together and discuss their philosophies

Idk if y’all caught it but Coach Anabara (the one with glasses) actually suggested Hinata to join as well as Tsukki, buuuut Coach Cryptkeeper most likely said “N. O.”

One thing that absolutely breaks my heart is that Hinata has been given NO opportunities for growth without being a part of a “set.” He’s had to scavenge for his own personal growth.

He had no middle school team to play with and the few that he tried to gather in his first and second years in middle school were reluctant or straight up told him “No.”

Kageyama is even surprised when he overhears Hinata’s conversation with Suga about all the places Hinata had to go just to get some reps in, like hallways and with the girls’ team.

Even on Karasuno, Hinata’s desire to grow (wanting to have his eyes open for the freak quick) was stifled by the comfort and pace that the team was stuck in (they knew they needed a change but didn’t know how).

Hinata is the embodiment of “won’t take no for an answer, ” despite having it thrown at him left and right:
“No, we won’t play with you.”
“No, you can’t join this team.”
“No, I won’t set you.”
“No, you can’t be the ace or unstoppable on your own.”
“No, you can’t change the way you hit.”
“No, you don’t belong here at this level.”
“No, you won’t get any opportunities handed to you.”

Hinata is impulsive and a bit selfish but what can a guy who’s had NOTHING TO RECEIVE do but GO and TAKE what he can.
His act on self interest isn’t rooted in having no care for his team it’s rooted in wanting to become better.
Arguably if he doesn’t want to become better, Karasuno is worse off for it. He said it himself that he doesn’t think the training camps are more important than practicing with his team, but he just NEEDS to know what makes GREAT players great and how he can become great too. This shows his true nature and fierce competitive spirit. Kageyama and Tsukki are praised and encouraged to step out of the team’s practices to train with strong people, but Hinata is shot down (in the anime) because he’s in a place that he wasn’t invited to and shot down (from most viewers) because at the heart of it they think he doesn’t deserve those opportunities either.
(But actually Coach Anabara said he DID want to invite Hinata, so what would be people’s reactions if they did see Hinata go to the training camp invited? Would they say that it would be a great opportunity or would they think he doesn’t need to be there?)

But Hinata doesn’t care. He won’t take no for an answer. He is Hinata Shoyo from the concrete.

It's precisely the complexity of the situation that makes it so interesting and cool for storytelling, so both your takes on it are incredibly valid imo! It's slightly reminiscent of the S2 Kageyama/Hinata conflict in a way that Hinata kind of gives in to his selfish desire and greed to improve, potentially sabotaging the tournament preparations, but in this case the scale is even bigger than in S2 because it goes beyond just their team. It's a consistent flaw of Hinata's character — and, at the same time, something that sets him apart from casual athletes and really feeds into his growth when things work out just right. These kind of conflicts are the most interesting to watch unfold.
I also feel like Adam got a really good read on Washijou; he's a really interesting character, and I'm glad the author kept him in the story in such an interesting capacity (and oh boy does it get better still).
The author actually got go to on a tour of the Olympic training facility before drawing it, so everything is quite accurate! And the coach's line, "Let's prove to everyone just how interesting volleyball really is", impressed the editors of Japan's weekly volleyball magazine so much that they emailed the manga editors and asked for permission to use it in the magazine.

Hinata proudly declaring his height and position in front of all the players his age (that is taller than him ) got my eyes teary 😭 because HE KNOWS his height is one of the factor he was not selected 😢

Adam is the extrovert that adopted Sarah, the introvert.

I love everyone's reactions here; it's so in character.

Yamaguchi is a little faint-hearted so he got completely spooked. Tanaka and Noya are both troublemakers. Daichi holds the team together. Takeda sensei worries first and foremost about troubling other people at the camp. And the other guys recognize Hinata's abilities and basically support him being there but don't want to make a scene.

39:31 You’re both right in your takes. Washijo is such a complicated old coot. 😂 After Shiratorizawa lost, Washijo looked at Hinata and commented the higher Hinata aims, the more treacherous the roads will get. Although he wants to deny the existence of an effective small athlete, Washijo nevertheless opened one of those treacherous paths for Hinata. 🥹 And it’s up to Hinata to become the athlete that Adam said he respects in s3e8 - the small kid who makes it impossible for coaches to cut them from the roster.

29:24 something that I don’t think people appreciate enough was how Washijo heard him say he wanted to “see” how high performers play. And how Washijo told him he could do just that. By being a ball boy.
