the 5th word of the 165th page of Eragon is actually "they", but "dragons" is the 2nd word on that page so you were close!

Finally a Big A video where I have insider knowledge on the topic! My wife is one of these micro influencers he keeps mentioning. She has her own page where she gets ads from authors and then she also runs the TikTok pages of 8-10 authors. Atrioc didn’t even get into Kindle Unlimited and the way that Amazon has a whole grip on the self published authors

Hi Atrioc! I teach first college writing a university in the north east and I thought this was a good video to show. I think it’s interesting that you mention Tik Tok as a positive force for the publishing industry because (my small experience) Tik Tok experience weakens publishing industry in every sense of the word except for sales. I would agree with you in a monetary sense that Tik Tok has helped with publishing, but books have centralized around fewer and fewer genres and books that would traditionally be published with the goal of waiting to find it audience (think Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy). Tik Tok is certainly having effect on attention span and ability to engage with difficult works. There was a great article in the Atlantic, but students at elite universities are not reading in major part because of short form content. I hope you make more about book content soon!

As a kid I would read a full goosebumps book in an hour. My bus ride to school just so happened to be the right amount of time to be able to get it done. Now that I am an adult I cannot find any time to enjoy books like I used to especially since I drive everywhere. Maybe if I relied on public transportation or flew more I could get back into it, but that might also explain why podcasts have exploded in the last decade. Its just something we can enjoy while doing other things in our busy lives.

from what i’ve gathered there’s a few different sides to booktok as a whole. some are basically book club pages (probably the most normal side), some more brain rotted than others and the full on brain rot 🌽 addict side. i don’t get it, but i don’t read anyway glizzy

If they added spice to Enron's financial books they would've gotten distracted ignored the fraud

I think the reason some of these Booktok books are able to get sequels published so quickly is the author has multiple manuscripts (or at least extensive notes) already prepared by the time that the first book hits the market. The publishers know that Tiktok trends shift quickly and they want to capitalize on the attention while it exists.

Also, didn't realize the Poppy War was a 'BookTok' book. That book is actually really good, I'd recommend the whole series to anybody that is interested.

Also, as a librarian, I feel that the terminal decline of print books is somewhat overstated. There are plenty of good books being published still, both fiction and non-fiction.

I feel like the traditional book world is slowly getting closer to manga/ light novel slop. Smut, schools, fights.

14:57 I can attest this is true with music too as an enjoyer of the medium. You also develop your taste over time and ofc the more basic stuff is gonna be more appealing to beginners who haven't developed their taste
