Climate change to make world sicker, poorer: UN report

There are fears from scientists that the conflict in Ukraine will overshadow the release of a climate report that's being called "an atlas of suffering" by the United Nations.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's report on global warming shows the pace and scale of climate impacts are accelerating rapidly and outstripping current actions to address them.
Despite promises made in Glasgow last year, emissions are higher than ever as economies bounce back from the pandemic and time to make changes is running out.
Al Jazeera's Nick Clark reports.

He says, "We can stop global warming in its tracks by limiting carbon emissions." That seems absurd, because self reinforcing feedback loops have already initiated based on current CO2/methane levels. If we limit emissions all we do is slow the increase in CO2/methane levels. That won't stop feedback loops.

The only means to a secure future lies squarely on governments worldwide, to restrict, regulate and redirect fossil investments and globalised consumerist capitalism. Without fundamental structural changes, this problem will not be addressed and millions of people around the world will suffer and die needlessly due to the greed of the wealthy and powerful. These changes need to be massive and it will take a long time, so every day of business as usual puts us further behind.

Unfortunately a huge number of governments worldwide are now heavily influenced by, invested in, and controlled by, corporate interest. The people who profit from exploiting people and the environment frequently have a huge power of influence in writing the very laws which govern us all. This is why nothing is changing at the pace which is required to avoid disaster, as far as climate change. Look around you and tell me it isn't so.

Governments have the power to re-write and amend laws for the common good. That is what a government is supposed to do. And this is truly a life and death emergency situation. However, what we see are casual lip services to "net zero in 2050" (aka. climate catastrophe) and carbon credits and electric cars and green capitalism and individual responsibility. All at the same time, oil companies are being subsidised, free trade is being signed, meat and forestry and construction and transport industries all expand, economies grow and alongside so do the greenhouse emissions and the dependency on these fragile, complex, unsustainable systems.

The governments of the world, and I do not speak for all of them so chill out before you point out this or that, are actively choosing not to take the economic and legal actions required to mitigate and alleviate the catastrophic hazards associated with anthropogenic climate change. This is because they believe that there is nothing more important than growth of GDP, even when this growth is obviously at the expense of the majority of average people, like you and me. This is already evident in many developed countries worldwide, which see great levels of poverty and hardship despite overall economic wealth.

So what we really need is to rise up against our governments, get involved in politics and activism and peaceful civil disobedience, think about alternatives to capitalism and globalisation, and talk to our friends and family about the state of things and the problems we face. Get back to a more natural way of life. Get informed, get involved, and get angry. People are too complicit, but we are not powerless. We are many more than them, and they depend on our labour and our existence.

You know, humans mostly have not worked 40 hour weeks. For hundreds of thousands of years, tens of thousands if you only want to consider post-agriculture societies, we have not exhausted our bodies and minds like this. Humans evolved making art, exploring, creating, nurturing, problem solving. We are not built to stand or sit for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Many reading this will scoff at the 'paltry' amount of 40 hours a week, which is exactly my point. Humans are not built for 40 hours of labour let alone 100. We are captured. They have hijacked our values and our dreams. We are collectively enslaved by a workaholic, profit obsessed, money worshipping mentality. If not within us, then those who employ us, or their employers, and so on and so forth.

How many individual lives are used to generate a profit for the man who owns the means of production? How can any man claim to own something which he has had no part in creating? It defies reason and it only makes sense inside a capitalist framework. Remove capitalism and the notion of capital profit, debt, growth, and all these abstract inventions of relative modernity, and it no longer seems logical.

This way of life is not good for us, not good for any life on earth. Most people are aware of this at some level or another. Nobody sane can claim it is healthier for a human body to sit in a box all day than to frolic in a meadow eating wholegrains. (unless you have allergies lol.) Why are we sitting idly by and letting our governments destroy our present and our future? Why are we so unable to imagine an alternative to this economic system, this government system, and the values we have been ascribed?

Time for action!
