Getting a Port Placed for Chemotherapy

What is a port, why do I need one, and what can I expect when I get it placed? I answer these questions and more to hopefully help ease your anxiety a little around getting one put in your body. Mine was placed in preparation of me receiving 8 rounds of chemotherapy to treat Stage 3 Colorectal Cancer that had invaded my body.

It's so amusing to hear someone else talk about what I went through too. I didn't, and haven't, had anybody to talk to that has experienced it even though so many people get cancer. It was strange going through all of these medical procedures and treatments and not have anybody to talk to that could relate; probably because I was fairly young. And for whom it may concern, I was awake when my port was installed. I didn't feel a thing. And I recommend the numbing cream.

Thank you so much for sharing. I'm getting my port on Monday. Thanks to you I feel a little better about the whole thing. I was just diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer and it feels good to know I'm not alone in this. Thank you so much. You are truly a blessing. God bless you.

I had one put in when I was 8 yrs old and taken out when I was 10. I had aml and almost died. But God kept me alive. Back then there wasn't very many people I could relate to(I'm 45 now). I'm glad to see us all being able to support each other knowing we aren't the only ones. It can be very lonely.

Getting a port made things so much easier. By my 3rd infusion, they ran out of veins. Dacarbazine actually burned as it went in my vein despite being slowed down 3x and diluted 1:2.
With the port I was in and out

I'm glad I found this video because I am having a port placed in two days. I have Stage 4 lung cancer and received my first chemotherapy infusion 6 months ago. I still receive immunotherapy infusions every 3 weeks and that is indefinitely. Lately the nurses have been having some trouble getting good needle sticks in my arms so a port was recommended.

Thank you so much as a retired nurse I know these things but now as a patient it’s a whole different level of understanding. I’ll have my port placed this week for Chemo next week, thank you this was really helpful!

Thank you for the port video. I’m getting my port placed as soon as my resection wound heals. I was really nervous. I needed the encouragement today. It’s day three back in the hospital due to infection.
