This medical animation assists with education & training for nurses and other healthcare providers on how to access an implantable port. Also called a port-a-cath, is a flexible tube that’s placed into a vein in your chest. A port helps patient in multiple ways, such as:

- providing intravenous (IV, through a vein) medication
- providing IV fluids
- help take blood samples
- provide medications continuously for several days.

There are 2 types of implanted ports: (1) a single lumen port that is a port with 1 access point which is the most common port; and (2) a double lumen port, that is a port with 2 access points thus providing needle access in each access point. Double lumen ports are used for people that regularly need more than 1 point of access.
