The World Record History of Super Mario Sunshine any%

In this video, I explain the entire history of world record speedruns for the any% category of Super Mario Sunshine - from its release in 2002 to the current day (September 2017). This game has a rich history of trick discoveries, rivalries, movement optimizations, and dominant players that seemed unbeatable in their time.

Regardless of your familiarity with the game, I feel like everyone can get something out of this. The current leaderboard for SMS can be seen here:

This guide from 1UpsForLife helped tremendously, and I can't thank her enough for archiving most of SMS speedrun history, which made my job a lot easier:

I was mainly inspired by SummoningSalt's "World Record Progression" series, and to some extent, RWhiteGoose's "Speedlore" series. I would highly recommend checking out both of their channels if you haven't already:

Non-OST songs used:

"Isle Delfino [Re-arranged edit]" by Megalorganiste:

"Golden Sun - Venus Lighthouse" by MattRa [Rock Arrangement]:

"Promise" by singtoconley, formerly kristofferson

I think my favourite thing about both this video and your 120 shines vid is how you manage to characterize the different top tier runners and get across their traits and what made them stand out from the rest. It isn't just "Here is this person who got the world record, then this person came along and got it instead." They all feel different. They feel like a rogue's gallery or a bunch of athletes from a sporting anime with unique quirks and skills.

Like, Kaffelon rising to prominence through defeating the other top tier players in live races, and being the type of guy who literally detonates his mic.

Toubou being this grizzled, long standing veteren who thrived on the scene for far longer than anyone expected, and someone who almost instantly snipes the record back any time he loses it.

Samu being this god tier gamer who can become a master of any game he touches.

Nindiddeh being a crazy person who learned all the hardest strategies and used them beyond the point of reason until he showed everyone they'd thought wrong.

Dude, what kind of sorcery is this? I've never played this game, never watched a speedrun of it, not even a let's play. I know nothing about Super Mario Sunshine and I'm not even interested in speedruns of any kind, I don't even know how I got here in the first place, yet you somehow managed to make an hour long documentary about speedrunning in SMS that had me emotionally invested in the players you introduced, cheering for them and being amazed at the absurd amount of effort and skill these people put in to their passion. You sir are a true master of presentation. I don't regret a single second of watching this work of pure genius (OK, maybe that's a bit too much, but you get the idea...). I hope more people get to appreciate the work you've done, have a nice day and good luck in your future speedrunning career!

Toobou is once again on top with a 1:13:17! His legacy spans every modern SMS generation and is still on top, what a legend!

EDIT: Now JJsrl with the 1:13:08, and gonna continue going for 1:12. Wild times!

This entire video summed up:
I finally got the SMS WR!
*Toobou peeks around the corner* What was that?
*Nididdeh opens the door* Cute

I don't speedrun. I've never speedran. I didn't even know about speedruns until a few weeks ago. I have little interest in them.
That being said, I watched this whole thing and loved it. It was extremely engaging.

There’s a definite joke to be made about how Italian has the fastest text scrolling speed

The first record since this video was uploaded has been set on June 21st, 2019. Congrats to Weegee on 1:14:37! 2 years, 1 month, and 1 day after nindiddeh

Youtube kept recommending this to me and I dismissed it as a summoning salt rip off, but dang, I regret even considering that. This was soo good and engaging. Kept me entertained the entire hour, and, while inspired heavily by salt, really stands on it's own feet. Also, nindiddeh is my new hero.

don't think I've commented on this before, but this is literally the most interesting video I've ever seen.. like I literally knew nothing about speed running and I still have watched this video three times, it just slaps

It's so crazy pretty much watching a summary of my sole life hobby for the last 5 years. I'm so glad I was able to be a part of this community through so many ups & downs. It's probably the single thing from my school years I have no regrets for doing. Thanks, Trey, for putting so much effort into this compilation. I'm glad other people are realizing the extreme importance of documenting the history of one of the best speedrunning communities of all time. Speedrunning may be small compared to other gaming communities, but it sure has some unforgettable moments and really fun memories.

I don't really follow the speed gaming races, but I have to say; this is honestly one of the best and most interesting and entertaining videos I've seen on YouTube - Got me all hooked on an hour+ video. This is basicly a freaking dokumentary on Speedrunning SMS, and a damn good one at that. Liked and Subbed :)

10 minutes into the video and I just realize its an hour long.

An hour into the video and I just realize its over.

I'm used to the condensed, to-the-point style of Summoning Salt's World Record Progression videos, those being in the range of ~20 minutes, but somehow, this video, at triple the length, was JUST as captivating, and held my attention the same if not better. I know this video specifically came about from your experience with the game, as you yourself run it, but you ABSOLUTELY should consider making this an ongoing series.
