It's been over 15 years since Windows Vista was released to retail. So I tracked down an unopened copy to unbox and install! And along the way, we'll be talking about some of the reasons Vista received so much backlash when it launched, and why it still has such a negative perception today.

The Vista Aero UI was the most beautiful thing Microsoft ever could come up with IMO.

I remember windows Vista having a very futuristic aesthetic. It was really impressive those times

I used Vista extensively when I was younger, I never really had any issues, it was a very aesthetically pleasing OS in my opinion.

Personally, I think the biggest feature Vista added was search in the start menu. You really notice it in older versions where you can't just start typing and find the program you want. You have to go wandering through folders looking for stuff.

I have fond memories of Vista. When I first saw it back during launch, I saw those glass UI and transparency effects and thought "We're finally living in the future".

My favourite OS of all time, even with all its faults.

I love Vista. The Aero UI, Widgets, the sound effects, animations and more. It felt much more consistent than any Windows that came after 8.

It's a pity that SSD's weren't yet a thing in 2007. The speed and performance advantage would have done a lot to ease the perception of Vista. It really was the 1st OS that made you realise just how bad mechanical drives were at running a complex OS performance wise. Vista also introduced a whole bunch of tech changes and improvements still used today.

There’s something kinda charming about this era of MS packaging, both the Vista boxes and the Office ones have a really bulky/solid feel to them. I was on MS Insiders before Vista launched and submitted some bug reports. Ended up getting a copy of Ultimate as a gift, pretty neat.
I was one of those weirdos that really liked XP 64 so when they announced a ‘first-class’ 64 bit OS I got super excited. As you can imagine, with hardware that could take advantage of it I had no problems with being ‘Vista capable.’ IMO the problem people described with Vista (asking underpowered PCs to run it) kinda continues. Just recently my mom was looking to buy a new (new!) laptop that was reasonably spec’ed yet had a 5400 rpm hdd? In 2021? Like what?

I used Vista when I was young, we used to have an old pc given to us with Windows 98 and when we finally bought a brand new machine in 2007 it had vista. It was great and I never understood why people hated it. I think the biggest issue was that it required much more powerful machines than XP and people tried running it on under powered hardware and hated it because it ran poorly, but on appropriate machines it worked just fine.

I'm from China. I got my first personal laptop in year 2007, a Dell Inspiron 1520 that came with Vista preinstalled. Throughout my university years I don't remember it had crashed for even once (although I was in transition to Linux at the same time). Most of my classmates got their first computers in university and many of them were intrigued by the fresh Aero look of Vista and they craved for laptops that could run Vista smoothly, and unfortunately not many of the affordable laptops were able to. I was fortunate enough to get a laptop with good performance, and Vista had not disappointed me.

The Aero UI was really artistic, even in today's standard. Actually I was not upset by Vista at all. Never had big issues using it, beautiful UI. I could really feel the upgrade from XP.

Vista is still the best looking version of Windows for me. I remember when some new computers with this system arrived at our school. It looked so fresh, futuristic and appealing compared to XP. And all those transform packs that change the look of XP to Vista.

Used Vista on my first desktop pc. And it really wasn't that bad honestly.

I remember getting a laptop with Vista around 2011, and it was a really good experience. I didn't have many problems and the aero theme was pure eyecandy.

I remember putting Vista on my editing computer in 2008. It was a very well spec'd out computer for the time, quad core CPU, 8GB RAM, and because of that I found Vista to be a joy to use, the Aero theme was awesome and I actually used the widgets that everyone hated, I thought they were useful. My biggest complaint was all of the security popups, but I think they fixed that in later updates.

Windows Vista's UI was the best out of all of them.

UI still looks beautiful. I remember trying to modify my PC's WinXP to have Vista Aero theme, using some software like the one by Stardock.
